For practically as long as television shows have existed there have been special celebrity guest stars. It's easy to see why, considering (at least in theory) a celeb spot on a television show can increase publicity and boost the stock of both the celebrity and the show itself in one fell swoop.
There are some drawbacks to this however. We've all sat through a baffling celebrity cameo or two that doesn't sit well with the show itself and draws you out of the experience.
You're no longer watching your favourite sitcom with its carefully constructed narratives and characters, you're watching some celeb you may not even like act (or at least try to) in a TV show, which can shatter your immersion, leaving you acutely aware that you're watching a scripted product instead of getting lost in the fantasy of it all.
Immersion is a fragile illusion and sometimes all it takes is a dose of the real world to break it.
The bad reputation of a reliance on special celebrity guests also doesn't help matters, with it sometimes being an obvious and desperate attempt to revitalise flagging ratings and get people talking about the show again.
When done well, celebrity guest spots can elevate the material and even be an opportunity for the celebrity to make fun of themselves, but as we'll see from the entries on this list, it can be an especially sharp double-edged sword.
