Crazy Rich Asians Has A Mid-Credits Scene - And It Sets Up The Sequel

Director Jon M. Chu's Crazy Rich Asians adapts Kevin Kwan's 2013 novel of the same name, but does the movie have a post-credits scene setting up a potential sequel? Kwan's best-selling novel inspired two follow up books, China Rich Girlfriend published in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017. However, Chu's Crazy Rich Asians movie only follows the events of the first book.

In Crazy Rich Asians, NYU professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) to meet his family and attend his best friend's wedding. However, she soon learns Nick's family is much wealthier than she knew or expected. Rachel is quickly thrown into the extravagant world of Singapore's rich and famous, which she must navigate while also trying to make a good impression on Nick's mom, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). Thankfully, Rachel has some help from her college friend Peik Lin (Awkwafina) and Nick's cousin Astrid (Gemma Chan). The trailers for Crazy Rich Asians previewed a spectacular romantic comedy rich with cultural specificity and now the movie is in theaters so audiences can see it for themselves.

Crazy Rich Asians doesn't have a post-credits scene, but it does have a mid-credits scene. A brief mid-credits scene shows Rachel and Nick celebrating their engagement, while a recently single Astrid looks on, after having ended things with her husband Michael (Pierre Png). It's here that Astrid is approached by Harry Shum Jr's character, Charlie Wu. Charlie has a major role in Kwan's book series and the scene seems to subtly set up future films in this world.

Of course, whether the studio would want to produce a Crazy Rich Asians sequel largely depends on the film's box office performance. Since the adaptation is a romantic comedy - not a superhero/action tentpole - it may not rake in the kind of profits it would need to assure further films will be successful. Mid-range studio rom-coms have dropped off in recent years, with the genre being populated more with TV movies or indie fare. As such, it's been some time since a romantic comedy was a mainstream box office success.

With that said, Crazy Rich Asians is opening in mid-August, a time when the studios have mostly rolled out their summer blockbusters. That means Chu's film has less direct competition. Plus, the extravagant visuals and over-the-top dramatic flare to Crazy Rich Asians makes it a perfect summer popcorn movie, further capitalizing on its late summer release date. Between good reviews, good word of mouth, and less competition than a release date earlier in the summer would have provided, Warner Bros. has set Crazy Rich Asians up for success.

Still, for those wanting more from Crazy Rich Asians and the story of Rachel and Nick, the movie unfortunately doesn't have a post-credits scene - though the mid-credits scene should please fans of the books who were disappointed by the lack of Astrid and Charlie's relationship in the main film. As for a sequel, fans of the film will just have to tide themselves over with repeat viewings of Crazy Rich Asians while they wait to hear about whether it will receive a follow-up.
