Marvel released a video celebrating the return of the Fantastic Four team with its new relaunched comic book. This at times dysfunctional but mostly loving family are some of Marvel’s oldest characters. The comic was originally developed by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961. The Fantastic Four were meant to be Marvel’s answer to DC’s Justice League of America.
As a team, the Fantastic Four has been missing from the Marvel Universe for the past three years. While the Thing went off to explore the universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy and Johnny Storm moved to the Inhuman city of New Attilan, the fate of Reed and Sue Richards has been a mystery. The two have been missing and presumed dead by the world since the events of Secret Wars. At the end of Secret Wars, Reed used Doctor Doom’s godlike powers to revert the Marvel Universe back to the way it was before Doom began tinkering with it. Reed, Sue and their children then left on a mission to rebuild the multiverse.

The trailer for the return of the Fantastic Four released by Marvel Entertainment emphasizes the importance of the Fantastic Four while teasing the new relaunch. It begins with writer Dan Slott saying that the Fantastic Four has been the cornerstone of the Marvel universe since its inception. Editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski addresses the question of where Reed and Sue have been all this time. It’s a question asked by both fans and characters within the universe. The relaunch of the Fantastic Four comic promises to answer that. According to Slott, Fantastic Four is the book where anything can happen and it is also the book that shapes what the Marvel Universe is. Executive editor Tom Brevoort praises the art Sara Pichelli is doing for the new book. Starting with Fantastic Four #1, the new series will reunite the team.
After taking on Amazing Spider-Man, Slott is now writing Fantastic Four with art by Sara Pichelli, the co-creator of Miles Morales. The first issue was released on August 8 and gives us a look into how important the team was as well as the hole their absence left not only in the remaining members but the universe at large. In the same vein of the trailer, this issue celebrates the Fantastic Four. Slott and Pichelli seem to be playing the long game, holding back the eagerly awaited reunion for later issues.
It has been a long absence but the first family of Marvel is finally coming back. There’s speculation on how much this return has to do with Disney’s acquisition of Fox, which owns the movie rights for the Fantastic Four, bringing them into the same universe as the MCU. Whatever their reasoning for bringing back the team, Marvel is establishing before the release of the new series that the Fantastic Four is an important part of their universe. It’s time to stop mourning the loss of Reed and Sue and start looking forward to the continuing adventures of the Fantastic Four.
