Riverdale Season 3 Trailer: There's an Evil Cult in Town

The latest trailer for Riverdale season 3 teases characters hooking up, threats old and new, and even Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa) getting his very own Southside Serpents tattoo. Suffice it to say, life isn't going to be quieting down in The Town With Pep, even with the Black Hood now caught and imprisoned.

After Riverdale season 2 ended with Archie being framed - and then arrested - for murder by Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), last month's San Diego Comic-Con trailer confirmed a time jump for season 3. The clip showed Archie and his besties Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Veronica (Camila Mendes), and Betty (Lili Reinhart) on a Labor Day weekend getaway trip following what Archie referred to as the "worst summer ever". Judging by the latest promo, season 3 will indeed flash-back to what happened right after Archie was arrested, even as new dangers emerge in the show's present-day.

The CW's "Middle of the Night" trailer further suggests that relatively new couples "Chroni" (Cheryl and Toni) and, er, "Koose" (Kevin and Moose) are doing well when season 3 picks up. Meanwhile, it appears that former teenage sweethearts FP and Alice are hooking up again, now that Alice's husband Hal is in jail (for that whole Black Hood serial killer thing). For even more, watch the new Riverdale trailer in the space below:

On the non-romantic side of things, it appears that Archie will be joining the Serpents this season (unless that Serpent shoulder tattoo is just a fashion statement). The new trailer also shows glimpses of what looks like cult rituals being conducted in The Town With Pep. This was also alluded to in the SDCC trailer for season 3, via a glimpse of a creepy ritual being carried out in the Coopers' backyard. Presumably, this is all connected to The Farm, aka. the mysterious place where Polly went to stay while raising her babies during season 2 - a place that Polly mentioned (somewhat sinisterly) to Alice during the season 2 finale, at that.

There's always going to be something crazy happening in the background in Riverdale (be it a killer on the loose or a deranged cult), but season 3 does appear to be taking a back-to-basics approach when it comes to the relationships between its main characters. It also looks like this season will continue to try and balance its teen melodrama out with not only pulpy genre storytelling, but also drama involving Archie and friends' parents. That should allow season 3 to improve on season 2, while at the same time carrying over the elements that really worked last season.
