Selma Blair has joined the cast of Netflix's new sci-fi drama Another Life. The news comes three months after the network announced the project, helmed by Aaron Martin and Noreen Halpern (Alias Grace) and starring Katee Sackhoff of Battlstar Galactica and most recently Longmire.
The series follows explorer Niko Breckinridge as she embarks on a quest to find alien intelligence. She and her crew initially set out to find the origins of an alien artifact, but of course encounter danger that put their lives in dire peril. The premise bears an interesting resemblance to the first two seasons of BSG in that respect, given Sackhoff's own character Starbuck's quest to find the origins of the Arrow of Apollo that would supposedly aid the Colonies in their journey to find Earth.

According to Deadline, Blair's been brought onboard to play a 21st century media influencer named Harper Glass. The character joins the mission in an effort to be on the front lines of what would obviously be a massive news story. Glass is said to be a shrewd journalist as well as possessed of social media savvy, both of which she'll employ to break the story should the crew actually encounter signs of artificial intelligence.

This announcement continues a prolific couple of years for the actress. She appeared in the well-received black comedy Mom and Dad earlier this year alongside Nic Cage, and in July she was cast in the film adaptation of Anna Todd's bestseller After, as the mother of main character Tessa (Josephine Langford). She also worked on Paramount's Heathers reboot as the shallow stepmother of Heather Duke (Brendan Scanell), before the anthology got scrapped due to its violent content. Most recently she guest starred on one episode of Netflix's Lost in Space as June Harris' (Parker Posey) obnoxious sister Jessica, whose ticket on the colony mission June steals in an effort to start a new life.
Blair's no stranger to the world of sci-fi/fantasy. given her role in Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy franchise (a role she was devastated she wouldn't be able to reprise once the reboot was announced). While Another Life looks like it'll have a distinctly different flavor than Hellboy, fans of Blair will no doubt be pleased to see her return to the genre. Plus the role of Harper Glass looks poised to play both to Blair's comedic and cerebral strengths - it seems likely her character's on the mission less for the joy of discovery and more for personal gain, possibly putting her in conflict with the rest of the crew.
