CBS All Access is already prepping for its fall lineup with the release of a teaser trailer for upcoming psychological thriller drama Tell Me A Story. Based on the Mexican series Érase Una Vez, this American spin, headed by Scream franchise writer Kevin Williamson, takes a modern look at the classic fairy tales fans know and love.
The dark, fantasy genre is not unfamiliar to creator Williamson, whose fame precedes him as the creator of Dawson's Creek, The Vampire Diaries, and The Following. Williamson pulled several stars he previously worked with for his current project, drawing from his rich history in the TV medium.

The trailer, which was released today as part of a presentation during the Television Critics Association press tour, marks Halloween as the start date for the CBS All Access series. It heavily features the show's stars, hoping to draw allure with the likes of Paul Wesley (The Vampire Diaries), Danielle Campbell (The Originals), Kim Cattrall (Sex and The City), and Billy Magnussen (Black Mirror). Set in a modern day New York City, the trailer hints at recognizable fairy tale elements - those noted include a red-hooded cape, pig masks, the mention of a wolf and his wolf pack, and a line from Cattrall about the battle between right and wrong.
As a remake of a prior series, Tell Me A Story owes it's existence to the original version released in 2017. With twelve episodes in it's first season, the Mexican web TV series has already covered several fairy tales, including Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Beauty And The Beast, and Pinocchio. The show garnered some success, and was nominated for a TVyNovelas Award for best series in 2018.
Though the Mexican version found an audience, it's difficult to say how the American take will fare. With it's ominous tone and fantasy aspects, it could find success by appealing to fans of shows like Once Upon a Time or Williamson's own Vampire Diaries. Yet, with the surging popularity of shows like Queer Eye, one can't help but wonder if audiences are currently turning to more lighthearted content in these trying times. Williamson's past success brings clout to the show, however it's not the first of its kind. Once Upon A Time held a spot on ABC for seven seasons, and Grimm aired on NBC for six. Has the market on dark versions of classic fairytales been oversaturated, or are audiences still interested in ways to turn Little Red Riding Hood into an even more sordid affair? It's too soon to tell, but Williamson's track record suggests he knows what he's doing.
