When Captain Marvel finally hits the big screen next March, star Brie Larson says it’ll serve as an origin story for Nick Fury almost as much as it will introduce one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. For a character that’s already been in more than a half-dozen Marvel films, teasers, and episodes of the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury’s backstory has never been fully examined.
While Captain Marvel has yet to appear in the MCU, her debut film isn’t going to be an origin story in the traditional sense. Instead, the film will be set in the 1990s and start off with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers already serving as a member of the Kree Starforce. During the course of her duties, she’ll travel back to Earth in order to deal with a Skrull invasion. While there, she’ll discover secrets about her own past - including those that have to do with her life as an Air Force pilot before she gained superpowers from a cosmic accident - and get caught in the middle of a galactic war. Naturally, her presence on Earth doesn’t go unnoticed by S.H.I.E.L.D. and she encounters a young Nick Fury, reprised by Samuel L. Jackson. Since the official trailer for Captain Marvel hit the internet back in September, fans have speculated about Fury’s potential involvement and the fact that he still has two eyes - as the version audiences are accustomed to seeing sports an eyepatch.

Now, thanks to Steven Weintraub, the editor-in-chief of Collider, posting a video from the 2018 Comic Con Experience in Brazil to his personal Twitter account, it turns out that Larson herself revealed that the secrets of Fury’s past will be addressed in the film as well. While answering a question about their relationship in the film, Larson frames her response with respect to the story as a whole:
"It’s actually a Nick Fury origin story as well, as he doesn’t have the eye patch. That’s a very interesting element, isn’t it? You know, they become buddies and I think seeing that dynamic, it’s a more playful side of Fury. It’s before all of these other things have happened, and I think getting to be scene partners with Sam while he got to go back after all of these years of playing this character and basically build this first foundation was just such a treat. I felt like I was part of history."
Much has already been made of Fury’s appearance in the trailers, especially the scene toward the end of the second trailer in which Fury pets Danvers’ cat and shows a soft side, but little has been revealed about his role in the conflict. However, Larson also revealed in the same video that Agent Coulson will be back as well, so it’s more than likely that S.H.I.E.L.D. and Fury’s rise within it will be featured in some capacity.
Larson’s comments about the characters’ relationship and her tone when speaking about the opportunity to work with Jackson would suggest that they got along well and should have solid chemistry on screen. Jackson has already praised Larson for her workout commitment and getting in shape for the role, and clearly the professional admiration is mutual. It looks like a standalone Nick Fury film is no longer needed in the MCU.
