The Jersey Shore cast love to party, fight and break all the rules. Well, not all the rules just a few. Still, they're a bunch of crazy rebels. It might have looked like a wild out of control party but it wasn't. It was a wild party with a ton of strict rules. Yes, the cast are rebels but even they know when to follow the rules. Of course, it's tough to follow every rule. Indeed, they broke a few when they could.
The Jersey Shore cast all became world famous. Living in the house wasn't all wild parties and hookups. As a matter of fact, the cast had to follow a long list of strict rules. These rules would make anyone go crazy. Clearly, they enjoy the fame but it came at a price. They had next to no privacy at all. Their personal lives played out on TV like a drama. For them, it was all too real. At the same time, they became world famous celebs.
On the other hand, they broke their fair share of rules. It's the only way they could survive. Let's be honest, breaking the rules is a lot of fun. It also makes for great television. The cast had to follow the rules or pay severe penalties. They always follow the rules but break them when they can. Here's a closer look at Seaside Heights and beyond.
Here are 15 Rules They Have To Follow (5 They Love To Break).
20 break - THEY HAD TO WORK AT THE STORE
Living at the Shore wasn't all partying and drama. In fact, each cast member had to work at the local t-shirt shop; The Shore Store. The cast made no money for that first season but still had a pretty good deal. The stayed at the house for free and made $20 an hour by the end of summer. For the most part, the cast worked hard.
The owner often praised Pauly, Vinny, Jenni, and Sammi as good workers. However, not everyone worked hard. Indeed, Mike "The Situation" was the worse worker of them all. It was so bad that nobody wanted to work with him. The owner called Mike "the laziest guy in the world."
19 follow - THEY MUST HAVE SECURITY WITH THEM
During filming, thousands of fans followed the cast around. It wasn't obvious on screen but the fans were there. When they went to the gym, work or the club there was always a huge crowd. According to producer SallyAnn Salsano, they had up to 3,000 people following them by season 3. Therefore, the crew was always with security.
They didn't appear on screen but were always there. It didn't matter if they hit the gym or toured the city. In fact, they had to set up security tents at certain locations. Indeed, there were even barricades around the house. At the peak of their fame, the security was busy protecting them from fans. The loyal fans did anything to get close to them.
18 follow - THEY COULDN'T MENTION SECRET ROOMMATE OR CREW
The six cast members became like a family while living at the Shore. However, there were a few roommates they couldn't talk about. Indeed, the producer SallyAnn lived in the house in Miami and Italy. Obviously, she never appears on television. She was with them and watching them at all times. She spent most of her time in the control room.
However, turns out the biggest party animal never appeared on TV. A crew member known as Joey Fist Pumps was the real life of the party. He was a union crew member so he couldn't appear on the show. Regardless, he would tear up the dance floor with the rest of them. It even got to the point that the girls wore Joey Fist Pumps shirts on the show.
17 follow - THEY DIDN'T MAKE ANY MONEY FROM THE FIRST SEASON
As noted, for the first season none of the cast received any pay. They did the entire season for free. To be fair, they did live rent-free and had a part-time job. In fact, Ronnie and Vinny almost left the show because of money issues. In the first few weeks, the went to production and told them they had to leave. They felt they needed to make money.
Instead, the producers gave them $500 for promoting at a club. At the time that was big money for Vinny. They did work at the Shore Store and went from making $10 to $20. They got to keep all the money they earned at the Shore Store. Regardless, they didn't make a single cent from that first season. Of course, they went on to become world famous stars.
16 follow - THEY HAD NO CONTROL OVER THEIR PORTRAYAL
Most reality stars don't have any control over their portrayal on the show. The Jersey Shore's no different. The producers have complete control and tell the story they want to. However, the cast sometimes didn't like how they came across. They just had to accept the fact they might come across in a bad light. It's all about ratings for the show. However, Snooki admits she'd do things slightly differently.
According to Snooki, the show usually focuses on partying and anything that has to do with it. She claims they didn't do that every night. There were also nights they would stay in and were just chilling. Clearly, the producers didn't think that was as entertaining. Instead, they only show them at the club, hooking up or fighting.
15 break - NEVER FALL IN LOVE
Obviously, this wasn't a rule the producers would enforce. In fact, this rule's created by the cast. Well, it was only Ronnie but still. In the first episode, Ronnie proclaims the number one rule is "never fall in love at the Shore". The other three guys follow this rule and never break it. However, Ronnie's the only one that can't. It's only a few episodes later he breaks his own rule
Ronnie and Sammi Sweetheart had the most intense relationship in the house. They fought constantly in Jersey, Miami, and Italy. Ronnie's the one that made the rule and then is the only one to break it. Looking back he clearly wishes he didn't break the most important rule.
14 follow - MTV NEGOTIATES WITHOUT THEM
As mentioned, the cast didn't receive any pay for the first season. Of course, that changed with the second season. At one point, Mike and Snooki were making $150,000. However, they had very little control over their contracts. As a matter of fact, MTV could negotiate without them involved. They had no part in that process at all.
Indeed, the cast had no idea a 5th season was on its way. MTV made that deal without the cast members part of it. In addition, there was no break between filming season 4 and 5. In fact, the producers didn't tell the cast until MTV publicly announced it. They knew the cast wasn't going to like that news. MTV made the call to start filming as soon as possible. They made more money but had little control.
13 follow - THEY GET ONE PRIVATE PHONE CALL A WEEK
The Duck Phone's one of the most iconic pieces of the show. In fact, the phone's just as famous as the cast. Many episodes feature the phone and conversations. There were no plans for the phone to be part of the show. The art director saw it at the flea market and picked it up. The producers didn't like it but they forgot the remove the phone.
The phone calls often include a lot of craziness. They didn't always have to go to the club for that. The cast only got one private phone call a week. MTV did this to ensure the best phone calls were on the show. Also, MTV had a strict cell phone ban in the house.
12 follow - THEY CAN'T WATCH TV, READ OR LISTEN TO MUSIC
There were many strict rules the cast follow while in the house. However, this rule plays an important role in the show. MTV had a strict no watching TV, reading a book or listening to music rule. They also couldn't use a computer or write notes to each other. There was nothing else to do but partying and hook up. MTV did this by design.
It clearly worked because they would party all day long. This played a part in Ron and Sammi's relationship. They had nothing else to do but flirt. Of course, it wasn't always parties and love. In fact, without any distractions, it caused a lot of tension. Living together and dealing with each other become harder.
11 follow - HOUSE GUESTS HAD TO PASS A TEST
The cast spent most nights at either Karma or Bamboo. They loved to hit the club and be the life of the party. MTV made it seem as if they'd meet random guys or girls at the club. They then bring them back to the house for the night. However, the houseguests were never from the club. In fact, the producers picked who would be staying with the cast.
It wasn't easy to get in the house either. The houseguests could not be as intoxicated as the cast. Therefore, they had to pass a sobriety test to get in the house. In addition, they also had to be 21 and over to get in the house. In fact, their ID's would go through a scanner before entering.
10 break - THEY TOOK LONG SHOWERS FOR PRIVACY
The cast had to agree to be on camera 24/7. There wasn't a single moment the cameras weren't on them. MTV filmed hours of footage of the cast at home, the gym, and club. Even when the cast would bring over a guy or girl to get intimate it was on camera.
In fact, the person staying over had to sign paperwork and hand over their phones. However, the cast figured out a way to break this rule. The only time they weren't on camera is in the bathroom alone. Therefore, they'd take extra long showers to get some privacy. It had to be alone because if they were with someone it was on camera. MTV considers two people a party.
9 follow - THEY CANNOT SUE PRODUCERS FOR ANY INFECTIONS
There are two things the cast of Jersey Shore's great at. First, they love to party all night long. Second, they love to hook up. As a matter of fact, there was a special community room for hooking up. Due to all the relationships, MTV had the cast sign a special agreement. They agreed to not sue the producers if they contacted any infections or diseases.
To be fair, that's pretty standard for a reality show. On the other hand, this wasn't a normal reality show. Pauly wasn't a fan of the community room either. He noted it was "disgusting".
8 follow - THE MAYOR'S RULES IN ITALY
For season 4 the cast traveled to Italy. They wanted to party it up and re-discover their roots. Honestly, it was mostly to party. The cast couldn't contain their excitement about making the trip. However, Italy did not have the same level of excitement. In fact, Mayor Matteo Renzi created a list of rules they had to follow.
He even listed the rules in the newspaper for everyone to see. For instance, the cast couldn't film in a bar or club that serves anything that would allow them to get intoxicated. This rule did interfere a bit. They also couldn't drink in public. It seems most of the rules had to do with intoxication. The mayor didn't want the city to become a town. Clearly, he had a concern about his town's image.
7 follow - THEY COULDN'T LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT A CAMERA CREW
As noted, the cast was on camera 24/7. There was a camera in every corner of that house. However, there was a camera crew everywhere they went. In fact, one of the rules was they couldn't leave without a camera crew. They were on camera at the tanning booth, gym and at night.
In fact, MTV had cameras all over Seaside Heights. There were roughly 42 cameras in the house, in the Shore Store, and along the boardwalk. The cameras went from the house to the Ferris wheel. MTV didn't miss a single moment. They filmed thousands of hours of footage. MTV made sure to film them at their best and worst.
6 follow - ZERO CONTACT WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD
For the cast, this was one of the toughest rules. MTV forbid them from having contact with the outside world. They didn't know what was going on in the world or with family. Snooki once noted if the president passed away they wouldn't know. MTV wanted the cast to focus on the group.
There were no distractions of any kind. It worked because they became closer and fought more. They were in their own little universe and didn't know what was going on outside of it. Snooki felt like they were in jail. Well, a cool jail that lets you party and become famous. The cast often talks about how nice it feels not to have a camera on them at all times now.
5 break - PARTY HARD
MTV cut the cast off from the world so they'd have nothing to do but party until they can't dance anymore. In fact, MTV encouraged them to party as hard as possible. Without a doubt, Snooki was the biggest party animal. That's saying something considering the other roommates.
However, in the final season, she broke MTV's most important rule. She chose not to participate in the partying and anything that revolved around it. She was pregnant at the time with her first child. In fact, MTV gave her a separate house of her own. This way she could still be on the show but away from the partying. Clearly, she was happy with her life choices. However, she did miss out on the partying.
4 follow - THEY MUST GIVE ONE HOUR NOTICE BEFORE GOING OUT
The cast helped make several catchphrases world famous. These include "GTL", "Meatball Power" and "Yeah Buddy". However, nothing compares to Pauly D's classic line "Cabs are here!" He would shout this before going out to the club. It was like a pre-party war cry.
It wasn't as spontaneous as it seemed. In fact, the cast had to give one hour notice before going out. They couldn't just go out when they felt like it. They needed to give the crew and security time to set up. To be fair, it took the cast at least three hours to get ready so there's plenty of notice. Indeed, it took Pauly half the day to get his hair ready.
3 follow - THEY MUST ENGAGE IN FAKE FIGHTS
It's no secret that the cast loves to party all night and day. However, they also love to get into wild fights. In fact, they've had a few intense fights. Turns out that most of these fights were fake. In season 2, Snooki and Angelina had a crazy brawl. It led to Angelina leaving the show for good. Rumors suggest the entire fight was a fake.
In Italy, Vinny and Pauly got into a street fight as well. According to witnesses, the two were planning out the fight beforehand. Vinny even tore his shirt up for added effect. Of course, there were a few legit fights on the show as well.
2 follow - THEY COULDN'T ENTER HISTORIC LOCATIONS IN ITALY
As noted, the cast didn't receive a warm welcome in Italy. In fact, the mayor had concerns they would give Florence a bad name. The cast had caused a great deal of controversy. There was criticism concerning the portrayal of Italian Americans. The mayor didn't want them harming Florence's reputation. He had many rules they had to follow.
He banned the cast from entering any historic sites. The mayor knew he couldn't stop them from shooting in the city. However, he could stop them from entering these historic locations. Indeed, part of the selling point that season was the cast getting in touch with their roots. Obviously, they couldn't get in touch with the historic side.
1 break - THEY COULDN'T PASS NOTES
MTV wouldn't allow the cast to have any paper or pens. This kept them from passing notes to each other. The producers wanted every conversation on camera. In season 2, Ronnie was unfaithful to Sammi at a club in Miami. Jenni and Snooki felt they had to tell their friend. The only way to tell her was to break MTV's rule.
They got a computer and wrote a letter to Sammi. They figured she'd assume one of the producers left the note for her. However, the producers wouldn't let the rule-breaking slide. They told Sammi they didn't write the letter. This resulted in an epic fight between Sammi and Jenni.
