Jessica Lange Teaming Up with American Horror Story Creator for The Politician

American Horror Story's Ryan Murphy has tapped longtime muse and collaborator Jessica Lange to star in his latest Netflix series, The Politician. Lange will be starring opposite Ben Platt, the star of Broadway’s runaway hit Dear Evan Hanson.

The details of The Politician have not yet been released, but it is believed to center around Platt’s character, Payton, a wealthy Santa Barbarian with political aspirations. Each season will focus on a different political race of Payton’s career, similar to the anthology storytelling style in American Horror Story, and Murphy will direct the pilot, which has been referred to as a one-hour comedy with social commentary.

According to DeadlineLange is the latest to join the cast of The Politician, following Gwyneth Paltrow, Dylan McDermott, January Jones, Zoey Deutch, Laura Dreyfuss, Lucy Boynton, and Rahne Jones. Following a bidding war with streaming services like Hulu and Amazon, Netflix ultimately procured the series from co-creators Murphy and his longtime collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Netflix has given the series a two-season straight to series order.

The series is part of Ryan Murphy’s five-year deal with the Netflix, which may also include another anthology series that Murphy has also expressed interest in developing. The series is called Consent, and is said to be based on the #MeToo movement. That said, though Consent may also end up on Netflix, Murphy is the co-creator of several shows currently airing across several networks, including 9-1-1 on Fox and American Crime Story, Pose, Feud and, of course, American Horror Story, the evergreen hit that has enabled much of Murphy’s success, on FX.

Murphy and Lange first teamed up for the inaugural season of American Horror Story, and Lange went on to become the matriarch of the anthology horror series for four seasons. Lange recently returned to the American Horror Story fold for the current season, Apocalypse, reprising her role as Constance Langdon from season 1, Murder House. She also starred in the first season of Murphy’s Feud as Joan Crawford opposite Susan Sarandon’s Bette Davis. Her work with Murphy has garnered her five Golden Globe nominations and five Emmy nominations with one win each. Throughout her career, she has also been nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two.

Murphy has proven himself a master at handling large casts and producing guaranteed hits - regardless of the consistent quality of said hits. With The Politician, it looks like he’s returning to his dark comedy roots of early shows like Popular and Nip/Tuck, and with Lange, the good luck charm of his later career successes, The Politician could prove to be another feather in his already well-festooned cap.
