The series will follow a journalist investigating the cases of the evangelical skeptic Dr. Richard Strand, who set out on various missions to debunk the supernatural, encountering people and events that involve personal and literal ghosts.

The Black Tapes began airing in 2015 with its 12-episode first season and has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike since its start for its deep themes, intelligent writing and solid production efforts, with a 12-episode second season airing in 2016 and a six-episode third season that debuted in August 2017 and ended on a cliff hanger for the supposed final season of the series, although the creators announced in March that a fourth season was in the works. The series has accumulated 41.5 million downloads to date and continues to hold a top 10 spot on Apple’s podcast category.

The Black Tapes joins a slew of upcoming series adaptations based on podcasts, with Facebook Watch adapting Limetown starring Jessica Biel (The Sinner) and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) and National Public Radio’s Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me! being adapted at NBCUniversal’s Wilshire Studios.
