Spider-Verse Considered Casting Tobey Maguire As Older Spider-Man

The filmmakers behind Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse considered casting Tobey Maguire, star of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, as an older Peter Parker. This news comes just after the film's premiere this past weekend and after the first reviews of Into the Spider-Verse were published, with the movie currently holding a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. The project has also been named the best animated film of 2018 by the New York Film Critics Circle. The film has been praised for its animation, drama and narrative.

Directed Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman from a script by Rothman and Phil Lord, Into the Spider-Verse serves as an origin story for Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man. Shameik Moore voices the web-swinging hero, and this universe introduces allies similar to Spider-Man in nature. In the past, Hollywood has retold the narrative of Peter Parker and this film breaks away from that. This is the first adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis' Morales in the role of Spider-Man. Fans have anticipated a superhero movie featuring Morales since his debut back in 2011.

Those involved in the movie seemingly wanted to resurrect the original Spider-Man by having Tobey Maguire join the project. During an interview with ScreenCrush, the three directors revealed their discussions of having Maguire appear in the film as an older Peter Parker. This wouldn't have been a physical role, but Maguire would have joined the other voice actors. The role of Peter Parker was taken up by Jake Johnson (Jurassic World) in the end. Rothman explained:

"There was. There were many thoughts about where we could put Tobey Maguire and others. I think after this film, those thoughts might have a little more traction. But before this movie, and introducing the idea of the Spider-Verse to the audience, I think everybody was afraid that it would just really confuse people. But wow, it would have been fun."

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse tells the story of Brooklyn teen, Miles Morales who has switched to the Visions Academy. Miles struggles to fit in at his new school, and isn't meshing too well with his loved ones either. During an outing with his uncle Aaron Davis, Miles is bitten by a radioactive spider. This of course leads to his demonstration of newly discovered powers as a result of the bite. The film has been praised as a spectacular origin story for the web swinging hero.

Knowing that Maguire was considered to return to his most well known role allows fans to ponder exactly what it may have been like had he gotten involved with the project. Maguire starred as Spider-Man for three films, now recognized as the Sam Raimi Trilogy, and was generally well received as Peter Parker. With a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse already in the works, it's still possible for a return to become a reality in the near future.
