Star Wars: Episode IX won't hit theaters until December 2019, but some fans are already wondering when they'll see the film's first trailer. While every film set in the galaxy far, far away comes with monumental expectations, the latest from director J.J. Abrams definitely has a tall order ahead of it. Not only does it need to end the Star Wars sequel trilogy (and the Skywalker saga) on a high note, but it needs to be a commercial rebound for the franchise following the box office disappointment of this summer's Solo. There will also be curious eyes watching Episode IX closely to see if it can provide an antidote for the extremely toxic discourse that broke out in the aftermath of The Last Jedi.
Lucasfilm is reportedly looking at the project as something of a course-correction, but it's important to understand the truth behind that claim. Abrams has already gone on record to say complaints about Rian Johnson's polarizing creative choices for The Last Jedi will not impact Episode IX. Instead, all parties involved are doing what they can to ensure they do not have another Solo situation. The spinoff's financial prospects were hamstrung by an uninspired marketing campaign, so the studio will have to implement a different strategy for Episode IX. With that in mind, when will the first trailer come out?

Recently, rumors suggested Disney would unveil the first looks at Frozen 2 and Episode IX at some point in December 2018, meaning a teaser for Star Wars 9 possibly could debut a full year before it hits theaters. It's true Lucasfilm did something similar for The Force Awakens (the announcement trailer came out in November 2014), but these scenarios are quite different. For starters, Episode VII was the first new Star Wars movie in 10 years and the studios wanted to share something with the fans to get them excited. Additionally, The Force Awakens had wrapped filming prior to the trailer reveal, which isn't the case with Episode IX. Abrams is currently in the midst of production and won't finish until February 2019. Granted, there's probably enough footage to cut a little something together, but Lucasfilm may opt to wait until shooting is completed.

If that's the case, then the safest bet for the trailer would be Star Wars Celebration 2019, which takes place in April. Fans will recall trailers for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi premiered at that convention back in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Since those two movies combined to gross more than $3 billion worldwide collectively, it would be wise for Lucasfilm to replicate that tried and true marketing plan as much as they can. While there's plenty of new Star Wars content on deck (including two live-action TV shows for Disney Plus), Episode IX will surely be the centerpiece of the event, with a panel to showcase new footage and details. The film will also be in the thick of post-production at that time, meaning there should be a handful of finished shots (with visual effects) to include in a preview.
With Disney's Mary Poppins Returns generating strong buzz and poised to do well at the box office, it'd be tempting to attach a Star Wars trailer to it and get the hype train rolling. However, it reads as unnecessary right now. The Mouse House's marketing team is busy with a new wave of Captain Marvel promotion, and one would expect Avengers 4 is right around the corner as well. There's still plenty of time left to promote Episode IX, so odds are they'll hold off a bit and get something out in the spring.
