Despite sinister outwards appearances, Gomez and Morticia proved to be one of the most wholesome couples in pop culture. The patriarch and matriarch of the Addams Family, they're devoted parents, passionate lovers, and committed individualists. Morticia grows carnivorous plants, plays music, and summons the dead, while Gomez detonates model trains, golfs, and challenges innocent bystanders to duels. In every iteration of their relationship, from the classic television series to animated versions and live-action films, they always represent peak romance and commitment.
Gomez and Morticia know it's important to keep love alive in a longterm marriage and use any chance they get to declare it for one another. They shower each other with compliments and kisses, constantly representing an ideal of ardor that seems impossible to maintain. But is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? Do they ever go overboard? Here are 5 of their sweetest moments, and 5 of their most cringe-worthy.
10 SWEETEST MOMENT: THE NIGHT THEY GOT MARRIED
The newest addition to the Addams Family franchise finally shows the dark magic of Gomez and Morticia tying the knot. The Addams Family introduces the pair on their wedding night in a provincial Eastern European town, surrounded by all their wacky Addams relatives.
Unfortunately, an angry mob with torches and pitchforks arrive to spoil the ceremony and chase them out of town. Desperate to find a place they can call home and live life on their own terms, they decide to head to America. They find the perfect home (an old asylum) in New Jersey of all places and live unhappily ever after.
9 MOST CRINGE-WORTHY: WHEN THEY GOT DISTRACTED WITH ONE ANOTHER WHILE WAITING TO DIE
While we're all for Gomez and Morticia gazing longingly into each other's eyes and spouting out macabre monologues about each others feelings, there's a time and a place. Usually it's Morticia that has to remind Gomez of this because he has a tendency to get carried away.
The worst offense came towards the end of The Addams Family live-action film in 1991 when the family was about to be killed and robbed of their family fortune. Gomez got so distracted with Tish he almost couldn't take on Tully when his family was in danger.
8 SWEETEST MOMENT: THE GRAVEYARD SCENE
If there's one thing that Gomez and Morticia do right as parents, it's remembering to take time for themselves away from their children. The Addams Family contained a beautiful scene of the to of them in the family graveyard, admiring each other in the moonlight.
Tish turns to Gomez and reminds him that, "someday we'll be buried here, side by side, six feet under, in matching coffins, our lifeless bodies, rotting together for all eternity." Gomez recounts how enchanting Tish looked when he first saw her at a funeral - her skin so pale that no one even looked at the corpse. They may have a disturbing love language to some, but you can't doubt the depth of their feelings.
7 MOST CRINGE-WORTHY: WHEN GOMEZ SWOONED OVER HER AFTER HE SPOKE FRENCH
While it's typical for Gomez to swoon over Morticia if she's spoken French, it's another thing entirely when he swoons over her when he's spoken French. If he kept that practice up, he'd use it as an excuse to make his lips a permanent fixture on her arm as far as the Addams family cartoon was concerned.
It all started when the Addams were planning another family reunion, but Gomez wasn't feeling excited. Not even a dip in his giant vat of lava could cheer him up. Luckily, Tish implored him to reconsider his foul mood with a few key French phrases, to which he responded in kind, setting off a cringe-worthy volley of innuendos.
6 SWEETEST MOMENT: THE TANGO
Rarely does a sequel surpass its predecessor, but Addams Family Values did just that in 1993. Not only did audiences get more of the horror and humor than in the first one, but they also got more of Gomez and Morticia being hopelessly in love. The passion is on full display in the tango scene they share while attending a double date with Fester and Debbie.
They become the envy of everyone in the restaurant as they only have eyes for each other, incorporating everything that makes their romance so unique; knife throwing, fire, and theatricality. It's one of the most fun scenes in the film and showcases the sort of marriage anyone would die to have.
5 MOST CRINGE-WORTHY: WHEN MORTICIA ACCUSED GOMEZ OF MAKING A HAREM
The Addams Family television show was able to show the day in and day out aspects of Gomez and Morticia's marriage in a way the films couldn't. While most of the time their union was one of undying fealty, there were occasional problems they had to face that put it in peril.
In "Morticia's Dilemma", Tish actually accuses Gomez of starting a harem. A patriarch from an establish Spanish family arrives to marry off his daughter to Gomez in a ceremony that has supposedly been arranged since they were children. Gomez doesn't remember agreeing to this, and despite being helplessly devoted to Tish, she still thinks he would be intimate with someone else. It was terribly out of character for an otherwise rock solid pair.
4 SWEETEST MOMENT: WHEN GOMEZ WANTED TO HELP MORTICIA FIND HER PASSION AGAIN
When The Addams Family are blessed with a bouncing baby boy to add to their creepy clan in Addams Family Values, Gomez is a concerned husband in a variety of adorable ways. He acknowledges how hard it was for Tish to go through labor, and understands the rigors of child rearing.
What is especially notable is that when Tish explains that she doesn't have as much time to, "seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade", he vows to give her time to pursue her passions. He is not only supportive of her as a wife and mother, but also as her own person with her own interests apart from family.
3 MOST CRINGE-WORTHY: WHEN GOMEZ SWOONED AT HER WHILE SHE WAS IN LABOR
We're all for Gomez and Morticia acting like a couple of lovesick teenagers almost all of the time, but there are a few moments when it seems like it causes more harm than good. One is when their lives are at stake, and the other is when Tish is going into labor.
In Addams Family Values, Tish suddenly has a baby – as in immediately. She goes from no baby-bump to pregnant to the delivery room. While the doctors are whisking her away, Gomez is carrying on with the same poetic ministrations in a moment of extreme crisis.
2 SWEETEST MOMENT: WHEN THEY DUELED EACH OTHER
If there's one thing that the '60s television series had over on almost every other iteration of the Addams Family, it's Gomez and Morticia dueling each other. Gomez would duel anything; a hat rack, Thing, an unexpected nightly intruder. But his favorite person to duel was Morticia.
In an era where the greatest danger to June Cleaver came from accidentally burning herself on a hot pie tin, Morticia was crossing rapiers with her husband in fights to the death. And she often beat him, disarming him by the sheer magnitude of her magnetic charm. Their playful attitude with just a little bit of risk never failed to keep the fire alive in their marriage.
1 MOST CRINGE-WORTHY: WHEN THEY DESCRIBED THEIR GOLDEN YEARS
While the first two live-action films in the '90s were hits, the final film in the trilogy was a massive flop. Addams Family Reunion featured a new cast, new music, and new direction for the family. One of its biggest offenses was failing to capture the chemistry of Gomez and Morticia.
Gomez, in this case, was played by the ordinarily great Tim Curry, and Morticia by Daryl Hannah. One night while lying in bed, they whisper sweet nothings to each other about growing old and being hooked up to life support systems, developing cataracts, and horrible halitosis. This usually isn't anything new for Addams family sentimentality, but, without any chemistry from the leads, it simply feels forced and actually disgusting.
