Doubling Down With the Derricos: Karen & Deon Share Their Pandemic Coping Skills

Some think that parenting on regular days is a pain, but what about parenting during a pandemic? Well, the Doubling Down With the Derricos family seems to be managing just fine, in spite of having not one, not two, but 14 children! TLC’s newest and biggest family, the Derricos, has been receiving love from fans all over the world since the reality show’s release this month. But as the world deals with the new normal, how are Doubling Down With the Derricos parents Karen and Deon keeping their cool?

Doubling Down with the Derricos came as a breath of fresh air on reality TV this August with its wholesome content. Karen (40) and Deon (49), a couple from Las Vegas, appeared on TLC's screens with their 11 kids in tow. With three more children on the way, the Derricos spoke about the systematic routines they follow when parenting their brood. Although it often demands that the most harrowing of chores, like getting ready for school or haircuts, be done in birth order, the Doubling Down With the Derricos clan aces it with ease. The $3500 they spend on groceries or the 20 rolls of toilet paper they go through each week aside, life is hectic and fun for this reality TV family. The last episode of Doubling Down With the Derricos saw Karen giving birth to her triplets, taking the count up to 14 children. Given that there are a total of 14 children between 1-14 assembled under one roof right now, Doubling Down With the Derricos fans have a lot of questions on their minds. But most importantly, many viewers want to ask Karen and Deon about their life in quarantine!

Because of their quintuplets, triplets, two twins and two singletons, everyone watching Doubling Down With the Derricos asked the crucial question: “How are they managing things during lockdown?” Karen and Deon spoke to The Grio about how they’re dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. “One of the great things about us coping with this pandemic is that we don’t take them to the grocery store anyway,” stay-at-home mom Karen shared. She added that the Derrico children don’t always go out unless they’re going to an extracurricular activity. "We don’t load 14 children up to run errands. I have early childhood education experience under my belt so that makes things easier,” added Karen. Early childhood education is a broad term used to describe any type of educational program that serves children in their preschool years before they are old enough to enter kindergarten.

The Doubling Down With the Derricos mother revealed how she makes lockdown fun for the children through activities like scavenger hunts. “We can’t go outside, but we’re making the best of it in this house,” Karen noted. While speaking to Inside Edition a few days ago, Karen said that “having built-in playmates is exactly what they have, so my heart goes out to the children in quarantine who is only one of them and the parents."

When Karen was at the hospital awaiting the birth of the latest Derrico triplets, Deon asked his mother Marian, aka Gigi, to come over to help him with the chores. The super dad of Doubling Down With the Derricos revealed that Gigi has moved to Las Vegas permanently in the past four months, right before the pandemic. The Derricos also have their tenant/nephew Eric Jefferson making regular appearances whenever they need assistance. While life during quarantine equals chaos for most parents, the Doubling Down With the Derricos family seems to be sailing through just fine!
