Without Wolverine, Spider-Man Would Never Have Been BORN

Spider-Man and Wolverine have shared a tense relationship over the years, with Logan frequently viewing Peter Parker as an immature amateur and Peter disapproving of Wolverine’s brutal methods. Nevertheless, the two eventually developed a strong respect for each other as they worked together in several team-ups and superhero teams like the Avengers and Fantastic Four.

Unknown to Peter – and even Logan for a long time – Spider-Man owes his very existence to Wolverine. In a flashback story told in Untold Tales of Spider-Man #-1, readers learn that Peter’s parents were actually saved by Wolverine shortly before Peter was born!

While Peter’s parents have had different backstories in the movies and certain comic book continuities, in the mainstream Marvel Universe, Stan Lee established that Richard and Mary Parker were SHIELD secret agents who lived an exciting, dangerous life hunting Hydra agents in the field. Richard had served in the Special Forces and was recruited into SHIELD by Nick Fury himself. Mary, likewise, was the daughter of an O.S.S. agent who first worked as a translator and data analyst before she met Richard and joined him in the field.

In the story, Richard and Mary journey to Bombay to find and save the mysterious “Agent Ten” who was captured and being held prisoner. Their search eventually reveals “Agent Ten” to be none other than Wolverine himself who was working for the Canadian government at the time. Captured by Hydra, Richard and Mary manage to get the drop on the agents and free Logan. In the process, however, they end up stuck in a burning building.

Fortunately, Logan recovers quickly, astounding Richard who knows the Canadian agent was bound and tortured for days. Mary collapses, frightening Richard, but fortunately Logan is able to lead the Parkers out of the burning building by using his animal senses to find a way to safety. Later, they learn Mary lost consciousness since she was already a month pregnant with Peter. Logan sticks around long enough to thank and congratulate the Parkers, but leaves long before Peter is born. In the final panel, Richard and Mary tell each other they're sure their son will be "amazing."

Tragically, the Parkers would be killed in action years later and even framed as U.S. traitors by the Red Skull. (Fortunately, Spider-Man would clear their names after learning the truth.) Likewise, Logan was abducted by the Weapon X program and lost many of his earlier memories, meaning he was unable to remember his unique link to Peter Parker even after he discovered Spider-Man’s true identity.

Still, it’s fascinating to know that without Wolverine, the Parkers may have never made it out of the burning building and Peter Parker may have never been born. Wolverine has had a major impact on many heroes over the years, including Black Widow and the X-Men, but now readers know that he’s essentially responsible for Spider-Man’s entire existence!
