A new rumor suggests that New Super Mario Bros. U is headed to the Nintendo Switch with a number of enhancements and add-ons. New Super Mario Bros. U would join a growing list of Wii U games to receive an enhanced port for the Switch.
Released in November 2012, New Super Mario Bros. U is the fourth title in the New Super Mario Bros. series which launched in 2009. The game sent Mario, Luigi, and two Toads on a 2D, side-scrolling adventure with 4-player co-op. New Super Mario Bros. U was a big hit for the Wii U, and became the console's third best-selling title, behind Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World.

A report from ComicBook claims that the popular Wii U title may get a re-release for the Nintendo Switch as early as this year. The article is based on rumors from multiple sources. According to these rumors, the port of New Super Mario Bros. U would contain new content, which is currently being kept a secret, though some of their sources are saying that the port will include New Super Luigi U, which was originally released as DLC for the game before being reissued as a standalone title. A possible title for the port is "New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe".

Nintendo could have ample reason to believe that New Super Mario Bros. U would do well on the Switch, and not just because of the Nintendo Switch's success as the fastest-selling console in U.S. history. Wii U ports have sold amazingly well on the Switch. In fact, the second best-selling game for the Switch is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a port of the 2014 Wii U title. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold over 10 million copies, beating out Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sold even better as a port for the Switch than it did on its initial release for the Wii U and is continuing to perform strongly. Other successful ports include Pokken Tournament DX and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which was released last month.
If the rumors are true, a 2018 release date isn't too far-fetched, considering that Nintendo has yet to announce their full 2018 lineup. More games and ports of Wii U titles could be coming in the near future, and New Super Mario Bros. U may be one of them.
