In Defense of M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘The Village’

Spoilers for The Village follow below. “You may run from sorrow as we have. Sorrow will find you. It can smell you.” So says Brendan Gleeson’s August Nicholson early in M. Night Shymalan’s The Village, as the character is reeling from the death of his child. Indeed, the very first scene in The Village is a funeral, as we watch Nicholson grieve over his young son’s grave. Of course, this wasn’t what audiences came in expecting.
