Shadowhunters, the television series based on Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments book series, only lasted three seasons on Freeform, but its fans were always a dedicated bunch. Of course, that meant they noticed when certain storylines were taken straight from the books, and others that were altered altogether.
Whether or not the books were better than the show is subjective, but the spirit of Clare's world and characters were truly brought to life by the showrunners, and that's something special. Here are five plot points taken from the books and five that were changed.
10 FROM THE BOOKS: Jace and Clary's Complicated Relationship
In both the series and books, Jace and Clary meet, sparks fly, and they become romantically entangled. Then they find out Jace's true origins and that he is actually Clary's brother. But then the plot twists again and it turns out Valentine Morgenstern lied about Jace's identity.
Jace and Clary are both infused directly with angel blood, but they are not siblings. By this time, Clary is dating her lifelong best friend Simon to try to stop her feelings for Jace, whom she thinks is her brother.
9 CHANGED: Jocelyn's Death
Jocelyn Fray, the protagonist's mother, never told Clary about their Shadowhunter heritage, as she was hiding from Valentine, Clary's father. While both the books and series Jocelyn her abducted and put in a coma, their plots diverged after she woke up.
In the novels, Jocelyn lived and married Luke Garroway, Clary's father figure. But the series had her killed by a possessed Alec, creating fascinating character development for Cary, as she was left to fend for herself in the Shadow world.
8 FROM THE BOOKS: Long-Lost Demon Brother
While Jace didn't turn out to be her brother, Clary did have a sibling long thought dead. It turned out that while still in the womb, Valentine experimented on him with demon blood without Jocelyn's consent or knowledge. But the child turned into something dark and monstrous, and Jocelyn always felt something was wrong with Jonathan Christopher.
Once older, he took on the name Sebastian and worked for his father trying to take Clary. Sebastian wanted a family but his demon blood corrupted his intentions and actions. In the end, it was Clary who killed him.
7 CHANGED: The Origins of Simon's Mark
The mark on Simon's forehead that protects him is a rune that shouldn't exist and certainly shouldn't work on a Downworlder. But in the books, Clary creates the rune with her newfound abilities in her desperation to protect her best friend.
In the series, the rune is known as the Mark of Cain and given to him through a painful process done by the Queen of the Seelie Court. But both versions show bad things happen to those who attack Simon while he's under the rune's protection.
6 FROM THE BOOKS: Maia and Jordan
Both versions of Clare's story introduced the werewolf Maia and the drama of her ex-boyfriend Jordan, who happened to be the werewolf that bit her and turned her. Jordan re-entered the picture working for the Praetor Lupus under the pretense of looking for a roommate.
Simon, dating Maia at the time, unknowingly brought Jordan back into Maia's life, sending her reeling. Eventually, Maia and Jordan reconciled, leaving Simon single once more. They got back together just in time for Jordan to die.
5 CHANGED: Izzy and Clary's Friendship
The Isabelle Lightwood of the books is much pricklier than the Izzy in the Shadowhunters series. Clare's version of Isabelle is a bit of a mean girl who considers Simon and Clary beneath her. When Clary wheedles her way into their lives and drags Jace through the city chasing after her mom, Izzy is not happy about it.
She wants nothing to do with Clary. But in the series, Izzy is a warm and welcoming sister who takes a shining to Simon and Clary. They become so close that she even asks Clary to be her Parabatai.
4 FROM THE BOOKS: Clary's Ability to Create New Runes
Infused with blood directly from a live angel makes Clary's Nephilim powers stronger than the average Shadowhunter, who are all descended from other Nephilim. This gives her the ability to create new runes that weren't given to the Shadowhunters in the Gray Book, the original runes given to Jonathan by Raziel.
Creating new runes allows Clary to create portals, magic once only available to warlocks. It's also how she defies the Shadowhunters' way of life by introducing new ideas that lead to a team-up with Downworlders.
3 CHANGED: Madzie
Madzie the warlock child is not a character from The Mortal Instruments books. In the series, Madzie is taken care of by her godmother Iris, another warlock. But when Iris gets taken by the Clave for her crimes, Alec takes her to Magnus for protection from Valentine.
Throughout the series, Madzie becomes the couple's unofficial ward. In the books, Magnus and Alec do adopt a warlock baby they name Max in honor of Alec's little brother who was killed. But this doesn't happen until much later in their relationship.
2 FROM THE BOOKS: Malec
The Shadowhunters series could not have had a modicum of success without the inclusion of the fans' favorite ship, Malec. The romance between the warlock Magnus and Shadowhunter Alec is a classic star-crossed lovers trope that created exciting drama. As a dutiful Shadowhunter and son, Alec denied his sexuality for fear of losing his peers' and family's acceptance.
But when he met Magnus, everything changed. Together, they changed the minds and hearts of Shadowhunters and Downworlders alike. Not everyone approved of their relationship, but Malec proved that the children of demons and angels could coexist.
1 CHANGED: Clary's Stripped Memories of the Shadow World
When Freeform announced the cancellation of the show, the writers took the opportunity to write a beautiful and bittersweet ending that took inspiration from the books' ending. In City of Heavenly Fire, Simon sacrifices his immortal vampire life to give his friends the power to escape Edom.
But it leaves him human and stripped of his memories of everything to do with Downworld and Shadowhunters, including his best friend Clary. The series took this plot point and gave it to Clary, twisting it as a punishment from the angels for her defiance in using new runes.
