Actor Terry Crews has been receiving an onslaught of criticism after he recently spoke out against the negative press America's Got Talent has been receiving over the Gabrielle Union controversy. Now, in response to Union's recent tweets on his defense of America's Got Talent, Crews has tweeted about where his loyalty lies.
After former judges Union and Julianne Hough were terminated from their jobs in late 2019, Union detailed the toxic work environment she encountered while employed by the show by meeting with NBC executives. Meanwhile, the negative press and public outcry is still there. Crews seemingly defended America's Got Talent from the onslaught of negative press the weekly talent competition show has received following Union's allegations about their lack of diversity.
Crews said last week, "When they talk about diversity, there was every bit of diversity on set, everywhere. I have never been in a more diverse place in 20 years of entertainment, so what can I say?" Union appeared offended by Crews' comments and responded by tweeting about "fighting for us all." But Crews has since issued a response of his own after he tweeted on Monday about how the only woman he aims to please his wife - check out the tweet below:
Crews tweeted on Monday morning, "There is only one woman one [sic] earth I have to please. Her name is Rebecca. Not my mother, my sister, my daughters or co-workers. I will let their husbands/ boyfriends/ partners take care of them. Rebecca gives me WINGS." Crews' tweet was met with even more criticism by some who felt he should have sided with Union following his Me Too involvement last year. Writer Ijeoma Oluo commented, "Yo man, you don't honor your wife by using her as a shield to avoid responsibility for throwing other Black women under a bus." Another commented, "Man... this is a terrible thing to think, let alone say." The Atlantic writer Jemele Hill tweeted Thursday. "Terry Crews could have spoken to his experience without going overboard to discredit [Gabrille Union]. BTW, I didn’t have to know Terry Crews or see what happened to him to support him. Sadly, black women are used to this."
Many are surprised by the former NFL star's response after he was an integral figure during the #MeToo movement when he spoke out against being groped by a male talent agent named Adam Venit. Crews filed a lawsuit and did many press interviews where he would speak his truth. It was a bold move by a man in Hollywood that could have cost him his career. In the end, there were no charges brought against the agent, and he and Crews settled their lawsuit out of court. Not only that, but Crews was unscathed by the fallout and has been a celebrated host at America's Got Talent ever since. Considering his response to Union's claims against the show, it's surprising to see him not even acknowledge the accusations that have been brought against the network executives.
