Dwight Schrute had suspicions surrounding Creed Bratton's identity in The Office as early as season 4. Dwight was played by Rainn Wilson for the duration of the NBC sitcom whereas Creed was portrayed by actor Creed Bratton, who played a fictionalized version of himself. Here's how Dwight showed his suspicion and why he was correct in questioning Creed's identity.
Creed Bratton was the Quality Assurance Director at Dunder Mifflin Scranton, but he often forgot his job title and his workplace responsibilities. The character was presented as a sociopath who often made bizarre and worrisome comments about his personal life. Creed was said to be a former musician and drug addict from the '60s who was experiencing severe burnout from his early life. Despite his lack of work ethic, he remained employed in Scranton for most of the series.
In The Office season 4, Dwight made an organizational chart depicting the hierarchy within the office. The chart was very detailed since Dwight included extra information regarding some of the employees' gender, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation. Creed's name on the chart was put in quotation marks to indicate that Dwight didn't fully believe that Creed was the man's real name. None of the other employees had their names presented in that fashion. It turned out that Dwight was right in his thinking.
In a deleted scene from The Office season 3 episode, "The Convict," Creed revealed that he spent time in prison which was where he acquired the name "Creed Bratton." Later in the series, it was implied that he killed a person named Creed in prison and stole his identity. Creed further explained his identity theft tactics in the episode titled "Money." He shared that he never went bankrupt because he passed the debt under another name. Whenever he found himself in danger, he would create another identity and disappear.
Sometime during The Office season 9, the police finally caught up with Creed so he faked his death and fled. It was unearthed that Creed was a member of the band, The Grass Roots (a band that the real Creed Bratton played in), and was being sought for his connection in drug dealing, trafficking animal meat from endangered species, and stealing LSD from the military. Creed grew a long beard so that he could disguise himself to attend the documentary event as well as Dwight and Angela's wedding. After the warehouse party, his old coworkers found out that Creed was living in one of the closets. He played a song on his guitar before being arrested. Creed's real name was never revealed but he sure seemed ready to give up running from his wild past.
