Bjorn Ironside is a staple on the show Vikings that drives storylines and shows interesting character arcs. Along the way, he takes many twists and turns along with adventures to strange lands with friends and foes alike. There are many parallels to be drawn with other characters along with these storylines and those push other characters to develop and other plots to twist.
Bjorn is strong, smart, and a serious warrior but what viewers often fail to see is the introspection that drives him to travel and explore. He gets married on an impulse and abandons his wife and child. There are reasons behind it all and details to pick up that reveal all to viewers. 10 Bjorn’s Character Follows Ragnar’s Storyline
When Bjorn is young, he looks up to his father until Aslaug comes along and he decides to go along with his Lagertha, his mother. Even though he doesn’t grow up with his father much, his desires and character arc follow Ragnar’s storyline in a pretty even parallel.
Knowing that Bjorn is likely Rollo’s biological son and not Ragnar’s, there’s even the similarity that Bjorn’s first wife gave him one daughter who died.
9 A Big Rivalry With A Brother Leads To War
Another parallel between Bjorn and Ragnar is the big rivalry between brothers that eventually leads to war between a Viking force led by one brother and a foreign army led by the other brother. In season 6, we see Bjorn and Ivar face off. Bjorn leads his Viking forces, men who have traveled with him loyally and are willing to die for him.
Ivar is leading the Rus army, foreign forces given to him in fear by a land he conquered. This is similar to the war between Rollo and Ragnar. Ragnar meets Rollo on the water (The Last Ship) with Ragnar leading Viking forces he earned and Rollo leading a foreign army that he didn’t.
8 Bjorn’s Beautiful Baby Blues Disappeared
In the younger depictions one Bjorn, he has bright blue eyes that make him striking and beautiful. They are hard to miss! The blue eyes also match Lagertha, his mother...and like Ragnar.
There are even scenes throughout the show that make Ragnar’s eyes appear to be glowing blue. In later seasons, Bjorn’s eyes seem more greenish-brown, or hazel colored. The detail is important because Rollo’s eyes have that same color that Bjorn’s eyes do as he grows older. It’s a sign of who his real father might be.
7 He Is Deeply Affected By Ragnar’s Infidelity
When Bjorn first learns about Ragnar and Aslaug, he is deeply upset and eventually tells his mother, Lagertha, about the indiscretion. Later, infidelity becomes a huge part of his defining characteristics.
He cheats on his wives, abandons his children, and then eventually even steals his mother’s lover just for spite. These behaviors can be traced all the way back to that one incident where he was upset by his father cheating on his mother.
6 Bjorn’s First Wife Had Postpartum Depression
Thorrun, a warrior and Bjorn’s first wife ended up abandoning her child after a period of deep depression. Bjorn basically saved her from slavery in a sweeping romantic gesture that went against the regular traditions of his people. He loved her and he didn’t care about that. But then Thorrun is injured in battle, leaving her badly scarred on her face.
When she has their daughter, she barely holds her or wants her and Bjorn barely notices. All of a sudden his grand gesture turns to shallow disdain. Thorrun eventually decides that she can’t handle anything anymore, leaves their child with Aslaug, and runs away. Any mother or psychologist can tell you that these were clear signs of postpartum depression.
5 Torvi Cheated With Bjorn, But There’s More To It Than That
After his marriage to Thorrun goes sour, Bjorn turns his sights on Torvi, who is a married woman with a child. Her husband is King Horik’s son and he doesn’t treat her well. His first wife was a slave who he freed.
His second wife, Torvi, was also a slave of sorts and Bjorn wanted to liberate her, also going against Viking tradition since she was the wife of one of the leaders.
4 Bjorn Travels Farther Than Any Viking Tribe
His prowess as a warrior is and the parallel that Ragnar and Bjorn are both curious about other cultures are both well established but Bjorn’s own conquests come off as sort of boring and out of context from the rest of the Viking storylines.
What isn’t praised much is that Bjorn travels farther and wider than any other Viking tribe. And when he gets back, he puts what he learns to good use.
3 He Makes It As A Leader, Unlike Ragnar
When Bjorn comes back to Kattegat, he becomes King. Unlike Ragnar, he doesn’t completely fail in the role. He eventually loses out to King of Norway in the election against Harold but it is clear from his later actions that people still respect and revere him.
They listen to him and it doesn’t appear to be only out of fear. He also attempts to set up trade agreements with other nearby countries. His time traveling abroad showed him how important and lucrative trade could be and he wanted to make that happen in his own territory.
2 Torvi Is Still Alive In Iceland
Although Bjorn never mentions his wife or children after he leaves them, there’s also no mention of Torvi’s death. After Ubbe saves Hvitserk, they go back to Torvi and the children, including Bjorn’s daughter Asa.
Ubbe dies in battle and Hvitserk leaves to join Ivan’s fight with the Rus. But Torvi is still alive, still a warrior mom, and maybe the only supporting member of Bjorn’s story to survive.
1 Bjorn Remains Always Loyal To His Original Family
After all the betrayals and all the hurt, Bjorn is forever loyal to Ragnar and Lagertha, even after they both are dead. Bjorn agreed to let everyone believe that Ragnar was dead during their second raid on Paris, in order to gain an advantage.
In the mid-season finale of season 6, Ivar and his army of Rus attack Kattegut and Ivar stabs Bjorn on the beach. Ivar is loyal to Ragnar as well and always a Viking. The details support that Bjorne’s “death” could all be a plot by Ivar and Bjorne to overthrow the new King Harald.
