John Wick Director Wants To Direct Marvel's Blade Reboot Movie

Director Chad Stahelski expressed his desire to helm Marvel's reboot of Blade. Stahelski is well-known for his work on the John Wick films starring Keanu Reeves, directing the first alongside David Leitch and the two sequels on his own. Mahershala Ali was announced to be starring as Blade in the new film for Marvel, but there are no other details known about the movie, including its release date. The last Blade film to hit theaters was Blade: Trinity in 2004, which was heavily maligned and had a considerable amount of behind-the-scenes drama.

Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan created Blade for Marvel Comics in 1973. The comics centered on human-vampire hybrid named Blade, whose primary goal is to rid the world of vampires, utilizing his extensive training and skills to hunt them down and destroy them. The character made his live-action debut in 1998's Blade, which starred Wesley Snipes as the vampire hunter. The adaptation grossed $131 million worldwide and spawned two sequels, Blade II and Blade: Trinity, the latter spelling the end for Snipes' run as the character on the big screen. Now that Marvel has found their new version of the character in Ali, fans have been wondering who will direct the highly anticipated reboot. Now, Stahelski has officially thrown his hat into the ring.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, director Chad Stahelski revealed he would love to direct Marvel's upcoming Blade film. When asked what superhero film he would like to have a chance to direct, Stahelski stated,

"If the opportunity ever came, I would like to take a stab at...the one that really jumps out to me would be like Blade. If they were going to redo Blade or something like that, just because I feel that one, for some reason, the vampire martial art action vibe. That would be a cool one to stretch and try and reinvent."

There has been heavy speculation over who could possibly direct Blade. In fact, Stahelski's John Wick collaborator David Leitch previously said he would also love to direct the Blade reboot. Each previous Blade film had a different director, with the first helmed by Stephen Norrington, the second by Guillermo Del Toro, and the third and final installment directed by David S. Goyer. Aside from who will star in the reboot, there is very little known about the Marvel project at this time. However, there are many theories as to how Blade could fit into the MCU with his solo film.

A new incarnation of Blade in the MCU, especially with Ali in the lead role, is extremely exciting and ripe with possibilities in terms of the storylines it could draw inspiration from. The character is ideally suited for a director who has a firm grasp on how to properly direct action sequences while crafting a compelling story that connects them. Stahelski would be an inspired choice for the project, having proven his capabilities with his work on the John Wick films, which have delivered some of the best action scenes of the past decade. His talents would be a perfect fit for the film, and if Leitch joined him, the reboot would be in even better shape. However, fans will have to wait and see who Marvel eventually taps to direct this new version of Blade for the MCU.
