Modern Family: 5 Ways The Pritchetts Are Exactly Alike (& 5 Ways They're Different)

Jay, Claire, and Mitchell are the original Pritchett clan. They are the backbone behind Modern FamilyDue to Jay and DeDe's rocky relationship, Claire and Mitchell have some childhood scars that continue to affect their day-to-day lives as adults, especially their relationships.

With their bond being physically closer to their father, Claire and Mitchell have gained most of Jay's quirks — for better and for worse. As giving and hardworking as Jay is, Claire and Mitchell have also gotten his control issues, their excessive need to turn everything into a competition, and the ability to lie about everything. At the end of the day, Mitch and Claire are far more like their father than they're willing to admit but there are a few small traits that set them apart.

10 Alike: They're All Controlling

Jay's desire for control has hooked its claws in his children. Jay tries to control his household, although it's evident that Gloria really runs the show.

Likewise, Mitchell's control issues spiraled into sharing problems. In one episode, Lily's teacher explained that Lily hated sharing her things, which was a direct correlation to Mitchell's behavior at home. Claire also cannot fathom a household that doesn't have a family calendar that runs on a schedule.

9 Different: Mitchell Is Far More Compassionate Than Jay And Claire

It took Mitchell some time but he eventually learned to be a more compassionate partner. Thanks to his parents' divorce and his sister bullying him throughout his youth, Mitchell didn't know how to express love through sweet gestures or even being kind to Cam.

But the more trusting he became in his relationship, the more compassionate and open he became. He told Cam and Lily that he loved them every day and made sure to express love through gestures. Up until the 11th and final season, Jay was still finding it hard to say that he loved his kids.

8 Alike: They Have Overwhelming Anxiety When Things Don't Go According To Plan

When the Pritchetts have their minds set on something, everyone else better move out of the way. But when things don't go according to plan, blow-ups happen and harsh words are said. Claire, in particular, hates when Phil doesn't listen to her or believe her stories. When this happens, she'll do everything she can to get his mind to change.

Viewers have also seen Jay in a similar kind of way on Father's Day. When his day didn't turn out exactly how he wanted (a delicate sausage tasting), he snapped.

7 Different: Claire & Mitchell Are Affectionate With Their Partners

Jay isn't affectionate through physical touch; he's affectionate through actions. He buys Gloria sparkly new things, he takes the family on amazing vacations, and he's always there to give Manny advice when he needs it. That's Jay's version of affection.

Claire and Mitchell, however, needed something more. They married men who are very loving in a physical kind of way, which prompts them to act similarly. Claire is constantly tugging on Phil's shoulder or hugging her kids. Mitchell behaves similarly with Cam.

6 Alike: They're Impatient Compared To Their Partners

Jay, Claire, and Mitchell aren't just distrusting and controlling; they're also impatient. In "The Late Show," the entire family has dinner reservations at a swanky restaurant that took forever to get into. However, Gloria was taking far too long to get ready and Jay was losing his patience. Likewise, Mitch and Cam were also running late because they accidentally wore the same outfit. As for Claire and Phil, she loathed how hard Phil was trying to impress her in his new suit and couldn't stand the neediness. On this night, the Pritchetts were all on the same team.

5 Different: Parenting Styles Differ

Mitch and Claire became successful adults but they didn't have the closest relationship with their parents growing up. Jay was constantly working and trying to get his business off the ground, which meant more time away from home.

Claire and Phil raised their kids in a fun-loving and controlled setting. Mitch and Cam also raised Lily in a loving home filled with music and activities. All three Pritchetts have different ways in how they ran their household.

4 Alike: They Have To Be Right

If the Pritchetts aren't believed, they'll go to extreme levels to prove their point. In "When Good Kids Go Bad," Phill accidentally pushes Claire in the grocery store and she falls over. To prove to the family that it wasn't her fault, she contacted the grocery store's corporate office and made a copy of the security footage to make her point. The family, however, was anything but impressed. She got her need to be right from her father.

3 Different: Jay Is Far More Confident Than His Kids

Unlike Jay, Claire and Mitchell aren't the most confident of people. They tend to overthink things, have a level of anxiety, and question their own choices. Jay, on the other hand, doesn't share their self-doubt. He's finally a wealthy and successful businessman with a wonderful marriage. It's not often Jay second-guesses himself or questions his actions like his kids do.

2 Alike: They Have To Have The Last Word

Thanks to the Pritchetts' desire for control, they also need to have the last word. Whenever Mitch and Cam get in an argument, Cam ends up walking away from the situation and Mitch typically has the last logical word. In the Dunphy household, Claire thinks she's smarter than Phil, which says it all. Claire would walk away knowing that she was in the right regardless if she was or wasn't.

1 Different: Claire Isn't As Emotional As Jay Or Mitchell

The older Jay got, the more emotional he became. Whether it was because of Manny graduating, little Joe taking after him, or his dog Stella, Jay didn't hold back the emotions like he used to. Mitchell too was always a little emotional, but Claire?

Claire holds everything inside until her emotions bubble over. Instead of tearing up like Mitch and Jay, she explodes with anxiety and anger. All three Pritchetts have their similarities and their differences, but that's what makes them such a dynamic family.
