How Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Gameplay Is Different From Smash Bros.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is an upcoming fighting game starring some of the network's most iconic characters. Since the game's announcement, it has been heavily compared to the Super Smash Bros. franchise, as many of the gameplay elements seemed essentially identical. Then, on Sept. 8, four new gameplay trailers premiered, showcasing not only similarities between Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and Super Smash Bros, but also some key differences that will help the newer game stand out.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is set to bring characters from Spongebob Squarepants, Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold and Catdog, among others, with many more still to be announced. Each playable character will have its own unique set of attacks, endemic to their personality - for example, Spongebob can shoot bubble projectiles, Patrick Starr can decimate opponents with an epic belly flop, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' April O'Neil can bash foes with a mic boom. As with Super Smash Bros., damage is measured in percentages, and the higher it is, the easier it will be for players to be thrown off the map.

IGN premiered the four new gameplay trailers for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, showing off many of the game's combat mechanics and giving a sneak peek into some of the character's unique attacks. Despite the many similarities between the new fighter and Super Smash Bros., these videos also hinted at how Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will differentiate itself from its established predecessor.

One of the most striking things in the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl gameplay trailers is the absence of items. In the Super Smash Bros. franchise, useful items will periodically rain from the sky which can be used to attack opponents, buff abilities, or heal players. They're a critical part of the game that keeps combat dynamic, but the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl trailers showed only character attacks, something that seasoned Super Smash Bros. players will need to adjust to.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl otherwise seems to be setting up an intricate gameplay system. Each character comes with  up, mid, and down attacks that can be performed at light, strong, or special levels. The directions of these attacks come with rock-paper-scissors logic; down attacks beat mid, and will cause opponents to stagger, while mid attacks beat up, and will spin foes around. Finally, up attacks beat down, causing recipients to be flipped over. Characters in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will also be able to block indefinitely, whereas in Super Smash Bros., blocks only last a certain amount of time. Additionally, Super Smash Bros. allows players to reflect or absorb ranged attacks, while Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl enables a volley between opponents until one of them misses. Additionally, falling could possibly be less of a death sentence as it is in Super Smash Bros., which only allows a double jump in the air to save characters. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl shows characters there may be ways to float back to the fighting stage from the bottom of the screen.
