Some of the biggest video game companies in the business, Xbox and PlayStation, have shared their most heart-wrenching single frames from games that are guaranteed to make players cry. The viral trend has made waves in gaming circles, with countless Twitter users following suit and sharing screenshots of their most tear-jerking gaming moments.
Narrative-driven and story-focused games will often include shocking or saddening moments to help drive the story and often to tug on the heartstrings of the player. Sometimes these moments are so well executed that they become almost more infamous than the games themselves, something which has been seen in releases like Naughty Dog's controversial 2020 hit, The Last of Us Part 2, which surprised and enraged fans with the death of a main character. There are countless video game moments that can get gamers crying, whether playing tear-jerker indies such as To The Moon, or AAA adventures like Halo: Reach.
Taking part in the viral Twitter trend, PlayStation UK, PlayStation AU, Xbox, and Xbox UK all took to the social platform to share their most cry-worthy video game moments. The game frames selected by the companies include screenshots from The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part 2, Gears of War 3, and Halo: Reach, showing first-party tear-jerkers from both PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The "'I promise I won't cry. It's just a single frame from a game'" trend was bolstered by the big games companies, with other gamers giving nods to other emotional rollercoasters including God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Death Stranding and more.
(Spoiler warning for the games seen in the tweets above). It's perhaps not too surprising to see both PlayStation AU and UK share images from The Last of Us series. The UK account selected one of the most harrowing moments in gaming, seen during the dramatic opening scene of the 2013 original, as Joel cradles his daughter Sarah. The Australian account went for The Last of Us Part 2, selecting the touching museum scene that highlights Joel's relationship with Ellie. Xbox UK chose one of Microsoft's most emotional moments with the sacrifice of Dom in Gears of War 3, while the global Xbox account went with Lone Wolf, the final campaign mission of Halo: Reach. All the scenes are different, yet all demonstrate the power of emotional storytelling within gaming.
There are endless games that have caused tears to flow over the years, from the final scenes of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead Season One to Life is Strange, and players can likely expect even more monumental emotional moments in future games. Many studios are pivoting away from online play to invest in single-player narrative adventures, as seen with EA's upcoming Dragon Age 4. With more narrative adventures soon hitting the market with God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and the highly-anticipated Halo Infinite campaign, there's likely going to be even more to cry over in the coming months.
