WandaVision’s Agatha All Along Wins Outstanding Original Music Emmy

WandaVision’s “Agatha All Along” has won Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Marvel Studios’ first outing on Disney+ as part of Phase 4 followed the events in Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) idyllic Westview, paying homage to different eras of American sitcoms. As WandaVision’s episodes progressed through the decades, each one featured catchy tunes reminiscent of iconic television shows of the time.

WandaVision’s music proved instrumental to each episode as the series captured the look and feel of different decades. Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez received Emmy award nominations for both the show's main theme and “Agatha All Along” from episode 7. The latter tune delivered arguably the show’s biggest twist, revealing Kathryn Hahn’s “nosey neighbor,” Agnes, to be the witch Agatha Harkness. The song explained that Agatha had been manipulating many of the story's mishappenings and causing trouble for Wanda. The viral, Addams Family-esque song went on to appear on various music charts as it was remixed and parodied, and remains extremely popular.

As reported by EW, WandaVision’s “Agatha All Along” has won the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, beating out nominations from Bo Burnham: Inside, The Boys, The Queen's Gambit, Soundtrack of Our Lives, and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. Written by the husband-and-wife team, the song was performed by Hahn with Lopez serving as a backup singer alongside Greg Whipple, Eric Bradley, Jasper Randall, and Gerald White. The series also won for Emmy Awards for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour).

WandaVision has also been nominated for eight Primetime Emmys (for which the award ceremony takes place next week), including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and acting nominations for Bettany, Olsen, and Hahn. It’s worth noting that, while Hahn did know her character had a theme song, she didn’t know she’d have to sing it. The actress was even more surprised at how popular it became, something that can also be said for her WandaVision character. This past weekend’s successes bodes well not only for the upcoming Primetime Emmy Awards, but also for Hahn’s future in the MCU.

It’s not a stretch to call WandaVision's “Agatha All Along” a pop culture phenomenon. Everything Marvel Studios creates seems to enter the pop culture lexicon in some way, and Kevin Feige has already confirmed that Hahn’s Agatha will return to the MCU sooner rather than later. Scarlet Witch is also set to return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a film where Wanda may very well need Agatha. And even if Hahn's return isn’t accompanied by that particular theme song, Anderson-Lopez and Lopez’s long-running relationship with Disney and Marvel Studios will continue as well.
