Iron Fist Season 2 Uses Black Panther's Fight Coordinator

The fights in Iron Fist season 2 may be improved with the hiring of Black Panther's fight choreographer. One of the biggest criticisms of Iron Fist's first season was the lack of action overall. Making matters even worse was the fact that when fights were happening, the choreography oftentimes underwhelmed. Part of the blame was put on star Finn Jones' shoulders for not being well-trained prior, but he's noted the limited amount of time he often had to really nail down what was required.

The disappointing fight scenes for the Immortal Iron Fist have started to improve over time though. He was better featured in The Defenders, but it was in Luke Cage's recently released second season that he really shined. Progress appears to already have been made, and the show brought in a Marvel Studios vet to help elevate the material in season two.

Marvel's live-stream from San Diego Comic-Con (via Comicbook) caught up with Black Panther fight choreographer Clayton Barber. During the chat, Barber confirmed he is serving the same role for Iron Fist season 2. He says Jackie Chan was a major inspiration for the style in the second season as they're going for an old school feel.

"Old school kung fu, that's what we wanted to do. We wanted to turn this thing into a punk rock song and that's what we did. You're really going to enjoy it."

While the fight choreographers for season 1 weren't necessarily the problem with Iron Fist's lacking fights, it's easy to see why they went with Barber for season 2. Some of Black Panther's best fight sequences came in hand-to-hand combat set pieces, most notably the battles for the crown at Warrior Falls. A visit to Wakanda may not be in Iron Fist's future, but similar duels could be thanks to various fighters the second season will utilize.

It shouldn't be too long before we actually get a glimpse at what Barber's addition means for the show either. The second season is confirmed to be coming to Netflix at some point in 2018. But, the first footage could come shortly. Iron Fist has a panel at SDCC that is set to begin momentarily as of the time of this writing, and a first trailer may very well drop. If it does, it won't be surprising if Marvel and Netflix specifically highlight improved fight scenes to help reignite interest in a show that not many enjoyed during the first 13 episodes. And really, with Danny Rand, Colleen Wing, and Davos set for the next batch of episodes, there's no shortage of capable fighters to base Iron Fist around.
