Krypton Season 2 to Explore Nightwing & Flamebird Origin Stories

Season 2 of Syfy's Superman prequel series Krypton will explore the origin stories of two DC characters: Nightwing and Flamebird. However, this version of Nightwing is a Kryptonian god, and isn't connected to the former sidekick of Batman.

The first season of Krypton saw Superman's grandfather, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) fight to stop Brainiac, "the collector of worlds", from destroying the city of Kandor. To defeat Brainiac, Seg had to team up with a time-travelling General Zod (Colin Salmon), who was revealed to be Seg's son. In the end, Brainiac's plans were thwarted, allowing Zod to assume control of Krypton. Brainiac's defeat and Zod's rule resulted in Superman's legacy being completely erased from history.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2018, it was announced that intergalactic bounty hunter and anti-hero Lobo will be joining the series as the big bad of season 2. It was also revealed by Cameron Cuffe that the second season will dive into the origin stories for both Nightwing and Flamebird, a pair of Kryptonian gods.

In Kryptonian mythology, Nightwing and Flamebird are powerful dragon-like gods. Much like Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Nightwing and Flamebird are eternally bound together. The two are always drawn to seek each other's companionship, though their stories generally end in tragedy. Following their deaths, the two are reincarnated. They spend every life cycle in search of each other. The pair have served as the inspiration for numerous superhero duos, beginning with Superman and Jimmy Olsen, who took on the identities of Nightwing and Flamebird respectively.

Season 1 showed fans how important the gods are in Kryptonian culture. The Voice, who was the figurehead of Kryptonian society, was a prophet of the sun god Rao. The Voice was treated like a god by his people, which is an indication of how much the Kryptonians revere their gods. Season 1 helped to establish Kryptionian lore, and it appears that season 2 will continue to expand on that.

It's unclear how Nightwing and Flamebird will factor into the story for season 2, or how they'll be reimagined for the series. As Krypton has remained faithful in its depictions of comic book characters like Brainiac and Doomsday, there's a possibility that Krypton won't deviate too much from Nightwing and Flamebird's comic book history. It will certainly be interesting to see how Krypton adapts the two gods for the series, and if they will be presented in dragon or human form. Adding dragons to Krypton may also cause fans to draw even stronger comparisons to Game of Thrones.
