Pokémon: 20 Strange Things About Mewtwo’s Body

Mewtwo started out as the ultimate Pokémon, as nothing in Pokémon Red & Blue could stand up to its power. The Elite Four and the Champion would crumble from only a few uses of Mewtwo's Psychic move.

The overpowering nature of Mewtwo was intentional, as it was meant to be one final gift to the player for completing the game, as well as being one final challenge to those without a Master Ball.

Mewtwo quickly became a fan favorite, due in so small part to the fact that it was the main antagonist of the first Pokémon movie.

Since then, Mewtwo has been a prominent character in almost all forms of Pokémon media.

It has been over twenty years since Mewtwo was introduced and we still know very little about its past.

Why was Mewtwo created in the video games? What exactly was the DNA experiment that resulted in Mewtwo becoming so powerful? Why is the kind and loving Mr. Fuji hinted at being the mastermind behind Mewtwo's birth?

We are here today to try and uncover the mysteries behind the power of Mewtwo; from the strange properties linked to its DNA to the unusual distinction it holds among all Pokémon.

Here are the 20 Strange Things About Mewtwo’s Body!

20 Its DNA Can Send Other Pokémon Into A Berserk Rage

The Pokémon games underwent quite a few changes when the games shifted from the second to the third generation.

There were so many changes that it became impossible for Pokémon from Red & Blue & Yellow, and Gold & Silver, & Crystal to be brought forward into the new games. Those Pokémon were trapped forever in Kanto and Johto.

One of the few items from the earlier generations of Pokémon games that has never made it the later games was the Berserk Gene.

This is an item in Pokémon Gold & Silver which can be found at the location where Mewtwo was found in the first games.

The Berserk Gene strengthens a Pokémon that is holding it in battle but confuses them in the process.

Detective Pikachu later confirmed that the Berserk Gene is composed of Mewtwo's errant cells, which means that even discarded pieces of Mewtwo's body are powerful.

19 It Was Actually Born Instead Of Hatching From An Egg

The method by which Pokémon breed is a mystery, and we don't mean this because Nintendo won't show Pokémon getting it on in one of their video games.

It's possible for Pokémon that are biologically incompatible to breed, with the most famous example being Skitty (a cute pink cat) and a Wailord (a giant whale) being able to produce children.

All of the Pokémon that you can breed in the game come from eggs, which you can acquire from the Day-Care Center.

The exception to this is Mew, as the diaries within the Pokémon Mansion state that Mew gave birth to a child, whom the scientists named Mewtwo.

This isn't an early oddity of the series, as the same diaries were kept in Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen. This means that Mewtwo is the only Pokémon that was born through conventional means.

18 There Are Several Different Mewtwo In Existence

It's difficult to say how many different Mewtwo exist within the universe of the Pokémon video games, as several can be encountered throughout the series, with no clue given whether it is the same one each time.

The Pokémon anime only showed the existence of a single Mewtwo, with the process of Mewtwo's creation being an important part of the first movie.

It seems that the method by which you can make a Mewtwo is more common than we thought, as a second Mewtwo appeared in the Pokémon Best Wishes series and would go on to play an important role in Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened.

This second Mewtwo is also female and is voiced by women in the English and Japanese dubs of the movie.

17 Mega Mewtwo Y Is More Powerful Than God

There is a god in the Pokémon universe and its name is Arceus. The various Pokédex entries for Arceus state that it created the universe to replace the nothingness that existed before it.

The power of the Almighty isn't all it's cracked up to be, as the power of the divine can be controlled by a single kid with a Master Ball.

When Arceus was introduced, it had the highest base stat total in the game. Arceus has since been usurped from the top spot by the likes of Primal Groudon and Ultra Necrozma.

The current Pokémon with the highest base stat total in the game are Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, which means that Mewtwo can become more powerful than god.

The only Pokémon that matches this total is Mega Rayquaza.

16 It Cannot Feel Compassion...

We still aren't sure exactly how Mewtwo was created. The Pokédex claims that Mewtwo was created using experiments involving gene-splicing and altering DNA, but what those entail exactly is still unclear.

It's also unclear why Mewtwo was created. Why did someone want to create a Pokémon that was unstoppably powerful?

The version of Mewtwo that appears in the Pokémon video games isn't particularly chatty, which may line up with the entries in the Pokédex that claim that Mewtwo is incapable of feeling compassion.

This is said to be a problem caused by the scientists who created Mewtwo, as they spent so much effort in increasing its powers that they never cared if it could feel love for others.

15 ...But It Can Perform The Care Bear Stare

Mewtwo cannot feel compassion, but it can channel the feelings of others and use them as a weapon, like a Psychic-type version of the Care Bear Stare or the Heart ring from Captain Planet.

Mewtwo saved the day with this power in Pokémon Live! which was a short-lived play that ran from September '00 to January '01.

In Pokémon Live! Giovanni has created a mechanical version of Mewtwo, called MechaMew2, which he can control.

MechaMew2 has the ability to endure all attacks that are levied against it and can fire them back at its opponent.

Mewtwo comes to Ash's aid in Pokémon Live! and defeats MechaMew2 by channeling Ash's happy memories into the mechanical Pokémon. This convinces MechaMew2 to turn against Giovanni and use Self-Destruct to defeat him.

14 A Jolly Mewtwo Is Incredibly Powerful

Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire introduced the concept of Natures to the series. Each Pokémon possesses a Nature, which determines which two stats will receive a boost.

A Pokémon's Nature is vitally important when breeding Pokémon that are going to be used in competitive battles, as the stat boost can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Mewtwo might be incapable of feeling compassion, but a Mewtwo with a Jolly Nature is the most powerful of them all.

This is due to the fact that a Jolly Nature increases the Speed and Special Attack stats, which are crucial for a Mewtwo to excel in battle when facing other Legendary Pokémon.

13 It Used Shadow Ball Before It Was Cool

The creators of the Pokémon anime were privy to information concerning the upcoming Pokémon Gold & Silver, which were still in development at the time.

This is why Pokémon like Ho-Oh and Marill appeared in the anime before the release of Gold & Silver.

The Mewtwo that appeared in the first Pokémon movie managed to debut a new piece of the Pokémon franchise without many fans realizing it.

This is due to how Mewtwo used the Shadow Ball move as one of its main attacks, even though Shadow Ball would not debut until Pokémon Gold & Silver, which was released a year after the first Pokémon movie in Japan.

12 It Has A Spoon-Based Fighting Style

It might seem like a silly idea, but the Pokémon franchise was once threatened with legal action over spoons.

This is due to the fact that Kadabra and Alakazam use spoons to channel their power, as Uri Geller threatened legal action, as he felt that Kadabra was an unauthorized parody of himself.

This is why Kadabra never appears in the anime or the card game anymore.

It seems that the creators of the Pokémon Adventures manga were unafraid of a lawsuit from Uri Geller, as Mewtwo fights with a giant spoon in battle, most notably in its fight against Deoxys.

Mewtwo has the ability to channel energy through the spoon, which is similar to how Kadabra and Alakazam use their powers.

11 The Inspiration For Mewtwo comes from EarthBound

The Pokémon series was heavily influenced by the Mother series, which is referred to as the EarthBound series outside of Japan.

This is partly due to the fact that some of the same staff worked on both games, as the original Mother was created by a company called APE Inc. and many of the APE Inc. employees became a part of Creatures Inc. which worked on Pokémon.

The final boss of Mother is an alien known as Giygas.

The fans of both Mother and Pokémon have noticed the striking similarities between the designs of Giygas and Mewtwo: both are grey, cat-like aliens with thin limbs and a long tail, both possess incredible psychic powers and both act as the final challenge in each of their respective games.

10 Its Cells Can Take Over A Human Body

The version of Mewtwo that appears in the Pokémon Adventures manga series was created in a different manner from the other versions of Mewtwo that have appeared in the Pokémon franchise.

In Pokémon Adventures, Mewtwo was created by Blaine, who was secretly a member of Team Rocket. Blaine didn't possess enough of Mew's genetic material to finish creating Mewtwo, so he used some of his own as a substitute.

Blaine and Mewtwo share a unique connection in Pokémon Adventures, as Mewtwo's cells were slowly taking over Blaine's body and would eventually consume him.

We don't know what exactly would have happened if Mewtwo's cells had taken over Blaine, as Entei removes the corruption from Blaine's body using its healing flames.

This severs the connection between the two and allows Mewtwo to become truly free for the first time.

9 Movie Mewtwo Appeared In The Games

In the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo attracts several power trainers to his island. Mewtwo then summons a storm that makes it incredibly dangerous to attempt to reach the island.

Mewtwo can learn a lot of different moves in the Pokémon video games, but none of them offer it the power to control the weather.

Mewtwo does have access to moves like Sunny Day and Rain Dance, but they lack the capacity to almost completely seal an area off from the outside world.

There was actually a unique Mewtwo that possesses the Hurricane move, which would allow it to create storms.

This Mewtwo was given away at a few specific events, in order to promote the upcoming Genesect and the Legend Awakened film.

8 It Conserves Its Strength By Standing Still

Mewtwo may be the most powerful Pokémon in existence, but it has no agency to use its amazing psychic powers, at least not in the canon of the video games.

The most powerful Pokémon in the series would rather hang out in a dark cave than taking over the world.

It seems that Mewtwo prefers solitude, as it is almost always found hanging around in a cave on its own, with the entrance protected by all manner of powerful wild Pokémon.

The reason why Mewtwo hangs around in caves may have been revealed by several of his Pokédex entries.

It has been said that Mewtwo prefers to stay as still as possible at all times, as this allows him to store his energy so that he can fully unleash his power in battle.

7 Its Design Has Changed Drastically Over The Years

There are several Pokémon whose design changed over time, with Pikachu being a prime example.

In Pokémon Red & Blue, Pikachu had a much rounder design, to the point where it looked kind of chubby. Pikachu slimmed down for his later appearances and took on the familiar form that we all know today.

Mewtwo's design has also shifted since its debut. When Mewtwo debuted in Pokémon Red & Blue, its head was considerably bigger than in later appearances.

As time went on, the proportions of its body would change, with the head shrinking with each subsequent appearance. Mewtwo's tail would also grow longer and its thighs would grow thicker.

6 It Once Fused With Clefairy

The existence of Mew and Mewtwo in Pokémon Red & Blue has led fans to speculate about the existence of a Mewthree.

There were plenty of urban legends concerning Mewthree during the early days of the Internet, with numerous false methods existing for how to catch the fake creature.

Mewthree technically did exist in the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga, which is a gag series that predates the Pokémon anime.

In Pokémon Pocket Monsters, Mewtwo's DNA was combined with that of Red's Clefairy, which turned Mewtwo into a goofy character who referred to itself as Mewthree.

This same Mewtwo would return at a later point under the ownership of Blue, where it would face off against Red's Clefairy in a gag contest.

5 The Might Of Mewtwo's Psystrike

Mewtwo is one of the Pokémon that has access to a unique move, in the form of Psystrike.

Psystrike is an incredibly powerful Psychic-type move that Mewtwo cannot normally learn until it reaches level one-hundred, though there was a level seventy Mewtwo that knew Psystrike that was part of an event distribution.

The annoying thing about Psystrike is that it was introduced in Pokémon Black & White, which was one of the few generations where you couldn't catch a Mewtwo.

This meant that your best bet was bringing one up through Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen or trading with a HeartGold & SoulSilver owner, as you were given a chance to catch a Mewtwo in the Cerulean Cave in those games.

Psystrike would later be used as Mewtwo's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U.

4 It Is One Of The Few Pokémon That Has A Birthday

It has been possible for players to breed Pokémon since the days of Gold & Silver.

Breeding Pokémon became vitally important in later generations, as it would determine the stat growth of each individual Pokémon, which was necessary when breeding Pokémon for competitive battles.

The people who breed their Pokémon for competitive battles may know the date when their Pokémon was born, but the established Pokémon that appear as characters in the series usually lack a birthday.

Mewtwo is one of the few exceptions to this, as the diaries within the Pokémon Mansion state that Mew gave birth on February 6th.

This date is now celebrated online by Pokémon fans across the world.

3 It Talked In Smash Bros. Melee

Meowth is one of only a handful of Pokémon who possess the ability to verbally communicate with humans.

This ability is made redundant by the presence of Psychic-type Pokémon, as many of them have been able to talk to people using telepathy in the Pokémon anime and movies.

Mewtwo demonstrated the ability to communicate with humans in the first Pokémon movie. Mewtwo isn't quite so chatty in the Pokémon video games, as he normally only speaks the word "Mew."

Mewtwo possessed the ability to speak in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Melee, where he will talk in his victory quotes.

This version of Mewtwo brags about his powers and questions his existence, much like the Mewtwo from the Pokémon anime.

2 It Needs To Cut Back On The Berries

The Pokédex has listed many different sizes and weights for various Pokémon that don't make any sense, especially when you consider how big their character sprites are and how they are presented in the anime.

Mewtwo's Pokédex entry claims that he is over six feet tall and weighs almost two-hundred and seventy-nine pounds, making him bigger and heavier than pretty much any trainer that has tried to control him.

The fact that Mewtwo is so heavy is odd, considering that he is one of the lightest and floatiest characters in the Super Smash Bros. series, which is usually the first barrier that players have to overcome in order to learn how to play as him.

Mewtwo moves like no other character in the game and he is easy to KO due to how light he is.

1 It Has Taken A Human Life

The Pokémon series has always presented the idea that Pokémon enjoy battling, so as to avoid any accusations of animal cruelty.

This hasn't stopped groups like PETA from causing trouble for the Pokémon franchise in the past.

Pokémon may love to beat the tar out of each other, but they are almost never seen attacking humans in a meaningful way.

The exception to this is Mewtwo, who is responsible for the demise of several different humans.

Mewtwo destroyed the laboratory where he was created, using a huge explosion of psychic energy, while many of the scientists (including Dr. Fuji) were still inside.

This means that Mewtwo is one of the few Pokémon that has been shown to explicitly take a human life.
