Nickelodeon keeps bringing back TV shows from the '90s, and the latest one to get the reboot treatment – plus, a live-action movie – is the beloved animated series Rugrats. Back in the '90s, Nickelodeon had a wide variety of animated series both for kids (such as Rugrats and Hey Arnold!) and for more mature audiences (The Ren & Stimpy Show). With various networks reviving some of their classic shows, Nickelodeon is not holding back.
The network has already announced the revivals of Rocko’s Modern Life, Invader Zim, and fans recently reunited with Arnold and the gang in the TV movie Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie. While these shows are coming back in the shape of TV movies, Rugrats will have a different come-back, as both a series and a live-action film.

Rugrats is coming back with a 26-episode order plus a live-action movie from Paramount Players. Production on the new series has already begun, with Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain (creators of the original series) serving as executive producers. As for the film, it’s being written by David Goodman and described as a “live-action film featuring CGI characters”. There’s no premiere date for the series yet, but the movie is slated for a November 13, 2020 release.

Both the series and the movie will feature the original characters Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Phil and Lil DeVille, Angelica Pickles, and Susie Carmichael, along with new characters. Sarah Levy, Viacom chief operating officer and Nickelodeon interim president, shared the following:
“Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures. What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie, and pals”.
Brian Robbins, President of Paramount Players, added that “now feels like the ideal time to reintroduce this iconic cast of characters to a whole new generation of young fans," and that those who grew up watching Tommy and his friends will now “be able to share that experience with their own children”.
Rugrats premiered in August 1991 as the second Nicktoon after Doug. It followed the day-to-day lives of a group of toddlers whose common life experience became adventures thanks to their imaginations. Given the series’ popularity, three theatrical movies were released: The Rugrats Movie in 1998, which introduced Tommy’s baby brother, Dil; Rugrats in Paris: The Movie in 2000, which introduced Kimi and her mom, Kira; and the crossover film Rugrats Go Wild, where the group met the Thornberry family from fellow Klasky Csupo series The Wild Thornberrys. The final episode of the series aired in 2004, bringing it to a total of 172 episodes and 9 seasons. A spin-off series titled All Grown Up! aired from 2003 to 2008.
A Rugrats revival series is not only a good opportunity for younger generations to meet Tommy and his friends but also a nostalgia trip for those who grew up watching their daily adventures. Although there are no details yet nor first looks, it’s safe to assume the characters will go through some slight makeovers, as did the characters from Hey Arnold! and Rocko’s Modern Life. As for the movie, it’s a risky move to bring a classic animated series to live-action, especially one centered on toddlers – we’ll have to wait and see how the live-action and CGI will merge for this one.
