Birds of Prey Theory: Harley Quinn Kills Jared Leto's Joker

The latest trailer for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) might have revealed that Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) killed Jared Leto's Joker. Both debuting in David Ayer's Suicide Squad from 2016, the characters have yet to grace the big screen again — neither together nor separately. However, unlike the DCEU's version of Clown Prince of Crime, his lady love's next outing is already set via the upcoming Cathy Yan movie.

Suicide Squad barely gave the couple much of a story due to the Joker's very limited screen time, while Harley Quinn was front and center alongside Will Smith's Deadshot. This left fans wanting to see more for the characters. A film focused on Harley Quinn and Joker was soon greenlit, giving the public something to look forward to regarding the DC villain couple. However, between the arrival of the much-lauded Todd Phillips take on the iconic clown, Jokerwith Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, and the Leto's new comic-book movie role as Morbius the Living Vampire in Sony's Morbius, chances of Leto reprising his take on the Joker are getting slimmer by the day.

Perhaps the final nail on the coffin could come via Birds of Prey. The second trailer for the next Warner Bros. superhero blockbuster was just released, and it opens with a peppy narration from Harley Quinn that confirms that she and the Joker broke up. Her monologue is paired with visuals of what she's trying to tell, and interestingly, during the part where she says that she has split up with her boyfriend, viewers see her jumping out of a moving vehicle. The driver-less truck rams into the ACE Chemical plant and subsequently explodes. Harley comments that going separate ways was completely mutual, but there is tinge of sarcasm in her voice, leading audiences to believe that Mr. J was left in the moving automobile to die.

The scene implies that Joker was with Harley in the truck before she jumped out, leaving him behind as it blew up. Leto is not expected to reprise his role of the Joker in Birds of Prey. Interestingly, the sequence includes a point-of-view shot from the passenger's side of the truck, which may be used to represent the Joker's perspective moments before his death, without showing his face. Assuming that the aforementioned moment in the trailer indeed shows Harley's murder of Joker, viewers will be curious to learn what led her to this decision in Birds of Prey. While the clip shows her seemingly dealing with the break-up, her immediate demeanor as the vehicle went up in flames exudes happens and contentment — as if she planned the whole scheme.

It's still unclear how this whole scenario will play out in the movie; however, killing Joker in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a painful way to write out Leto's character out of the DCEU. Suicide Squad barely established his character, and with no concrete plans for him moving forward, it's a clever route for all parties involved to move on from his version of the character. In terms of Harley's personal story, getting rid of the Joker gives her the opportunity to rely on herself — as she said in the trailer, soon after the break-up she was back on her feet. Now, she can have new adventures without the shadow of the Joker haunting her everywhere. Finally, addressing this issue potentially at the start of the movie allows it focus on its own narrative devoid of the Joker. Now, it can all be about Harley teaming up with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bett), Cass (Ella Jay Basco) and Renee (Rosie Perez) as they go up against Ewan McGregor's Black Mask.
