Rosario Dawson filmed a cameo for 2005's The Devil's Rejects, but it was ultimately left on the cutting room floor.
The Devil's Rejects follows the Firefly family right after the events that took place in House of 1000 Corpses. It's a very different film compared to its predecessor, and takes a direction many may not have expected Zombie to go. Luckily, it was a successful direction. In 2019, 3 From Hell was released to further the story of the family.
For many fans, The Devil's Rejects is the strongest film of the three. As far as Rotten Tomatoes is concerned, this is true, with critics giving Rejects a 54% and an audience rating of 78%. Comparing that to the 20% and 65% rating of Corpses, and there's a clear winner. 3 From Hell is somewhere in the middle, with a 53% critic rating and 63% audience rating as of this writing.
Rosario Dawson was originally supposed to have a very brief cameo in The Devil's Rejects that was cut later on. The brief scene shows Dawson as a nurse tending to Dr. Satan, who was presumably injured in the shootout that happens at the beginning of the film. The scene shows him to be asleep or in a coma, only to grab Dawson and rip her throat out. It's a fun, gory scene that would have been a very nice send-off for Dr. Satan and a great cameo for Dawson, but it was left out.
Dr. Satan was originally scripted to have a much larger role to play in The Devil's Rejects, but director Rob Zombie felt that the character didn't fit well with the tone of the movie. He even went as far to suggest that having Dr. Satan in The Devil's Rejects was similar to casting Chewbacca in a movie like Bonnie and Clyde. So, the subplot was cut, and in turn, so was Rosario Dawson's scene. Luckily, the scenes were added into the DVD extras.
Cutting Dr. Satan's subplot did two beneficial things. One is that leaving him out allowed The Devil's Rejects to be its own film with its own, unique tone, and it succeeded in doing just that. Second is that the final image of Dr. Satan that's burned into the mind of the viewer is of him in his full-on medical gear and mask, ready to cut up Jerry in House of 1000 Corpses, and that's a win. Of course, not being able to see Rosario Dawson in the film is anything but beneficial.
