Grey's Anatomy: The 10 Weirdest Operations Ever Seen In The Show

It's safe to say that Grey's Anatomy doesn't always reflect the daily life of a surgeon. It's more than likely that most doctors haven't come across someone who has the bizarre afflictions that so many patients do, but that's what is interesting about the show.

They raise awareness to diseases we may not know of. However, there have also been moments that have left fans bewildered on how certain patients got themselves in the predicament and whether they could be saved. Want some examples? Keep reading to discover the 10 weirdest operations ever seen on the show.

10 Izzie Saves A Deer

Does anyone else remember when Izzie managed to save a deer's life? In "A Change Is Gonna Come," Izzie rushes to the aid of a young boy and his father after they came into the ER asking for help. Desperate to impress her new interns, Izzie has no qualms following them out to where they find a deer.

Instead of turning them away, Izzie spends the whole day treating and operating on the animal. Even without any knowledge of veterinary medicine, Izzie somehow manages to revive the deer.

9 The Guy Who Got Mauled By A Lion

Fans witnessed one of the weirdest incidents in "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" when a patient was wheeled into the ER after being mauled by a lion. The case got even weirder when the patient's girlfriend announced she had been keeping the animal as a pet.

It didn't even cross her mind that her so-called pet tried to eat her, but she also failed to realize that she endangered her boyfriend's life as well. Half the hospital then spent the day trying to repair the damage the animal caused. It was a truly bizarre case.

8 Piercing Stuck In The IUD

In "Oh, the Guilt," the surgeons heard a woman was to be admitted with 'a foreign body' stuck inside of her. When she arrived, they were shocked to discover the 'foreign body' was her ex-husband. It turned out her ex had a piercing and it had got caught on her IUD.

When the surgeon's tried to separate them, Adam ended up having a heart attack, and his aorta was dissected. To make matters worse, the former couple's daughter ended up walking in on them in a compromising position. It got so awkward so fast.

7 The Patient With Toxic Blood

In "Wishin' and Hopin'," fans were also concerned for their favorite characters when several of them began collapsing for no reason. After George, Alex, and Richard all fall ill, they soon discovered that one of the patient's blood was a neurotoxin.

Since half the staff was down after being exposed to the toxins, several attendings and interns were forced to step up and finish the surgery. What was most surprising was the patient survived even though she was exposed to the high concentration of toxins the longest.

6 The Girl Who Could Hear Her Organs

In "Shiny Happy People," Demi Lovato guest-starred as a patient who was suspected of having paranoid schizophrenia. She was about to be committed to psych after she tried to claw her eyes out. However, Alex soon discovered that she had superior canal dehiscence syndrome.

This means a small hole developed in her inner ear, which caused Hayley to hear everything inside her body and amplified other sounds. Once Alex, Arizona, and Derek performed the surgery to repair the ear, Hayley was well again. Fans will agree it is one of the most unique cases on the show.

5 Abdominal Wall Transplant

No one will ever forget Megan Hunt's abdominal wall transplant, which ended up winning Meredith the Catherine Fox award. When Megan returned in the season 14 premiere, her family was shocked to see she had a 'frozen abdomen.' As Meredith and the other surgeons reversed her colonoscopy, Mere soon realized they couldn't close because there wasn't enough skin.

This then led to Meredith proposing an abdominal wall transplant, which she got inspiration from by picking at her wallpaper. It's not exactly how you think surgeons would come up with ideas.

4 Bomb In The Abdomen

One of the show's weirdest operations also occurred in notorious episodes "It's The End Of The World/As We Know It." When fans tuned in to the episode, did you ever think there would be a patient stuck with a bomb in his chest? Or that Meredith would have to stick her hand on it to stop the patient from bleeding out?

Meredith and Burke were soon focused on transporting the patient to another theater after they discovered they were above the hospital's oxygen line. It was absolutely bizarre that only two people died after the bomb went off.

3 Heart In A Box

Although it was a medical marvel, fans will agree that the heart in a box was one of the weirdest operations they ever saw. In "Heart-Shaped Box," Cristina and Teddy were performing an organ transplant, which fans had never seen before.

Instead of transplanting it straight into a body, Teddy connects it to some wires and places it in a box. This then allows the heart to function as it continues to pump blood around. The box also allowed the organ to be easily transported to a new donor. It was a weird operation but in a good way.

2 Gungina

In "Come on Down to My Boat, Baby," April and Arizona were in the ER treating a woman after she fainted at a jail. When they began examining her after she complained about abdominal pains, the surgeons were shocked when a gunshot rang out across the room.

They soon realize that the patient, Danielle, had smuggled a gun through her vagina and it had gone off. Now, April and Arizona were forced to operate after it fired through her abdominal wall. This case was then dubbed "Gungina" by Carina and the other surgeons.

1 The One With The Cement

The weirdest surgery to ever occur on the show has to be the teen encased in cement. In the season 4 finale, several surgeons were forced to race against the clock after a student jumped into wet cement on a dare. As the rescue team tried to free him from the block, Callie, Mark, Hahn, and Bailey all rushed to come up with a solution to save him.

Just as they thought he was stabilized, Bailey soon realized they made a fatal mistake by not placing a catheter in. Fans were further on tenterhooks when Andrew crashed and threw a clot. Luckily, it had a happy ending but it still has to be the weirdest operation.
