Various types of video games exist in the world, like first-person shooter and action-adventure games, but one of the most popular genres is role-playing games (RPGs). This type of video game puts a player in the shoes of the main character and has them play through a storyline. The gamer must complete the series of tasks within the story in order to complete the game— but not all are created equal.
There are many RPGs that have grown popular over the years, but some of the storylines are better than others. A few games do live up to the hype, while others are severely overrated due to the failure of their storyline to inspire players. In the latter case, one can only hope that there is at least some engaging gameplay to pick up the slack!
10 Amazing: The Last Of Us Part I & Part II
This game franchise called The Last of Us has a great story which is why so many people choose to play the game in the first place. Players form emotional ties to the characters as they watch the bond between Ellie and Joel grow throughout the game. It allows gamers to feel included in the entire experience due to its realism and depth that makes players feel like they are in the game themselves.
9 Overrated: Far Cry 5
One of the biggest complaints of this game was the storyline, and part of the reason for this was the way it dragged players into random cutscenes during missions. The basis of the plot doesn't make sense to begin with as a small group is expected to take on thousands of enemies, and it only grows worse from there. They went with the route of outrageous lunacy and they took it to a level that no gamer could comprehend as the story continued to make random twists and turns.
8 Amazing: Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 2 is renowned for its amazing storyline that has fans everywhere raving about this game even years after its release. It seamlessly integrates several sci-fi aspects into the game in a way that keeps players interested throughout its entirety. The final result is dependent upon the choices that a player makes throughout the game and this is why many find themselves wishing for a film to be made of this game.
7 Overrated: Destiny
The first installment in the Destiny franchise left fans with a story that had them questioning why they were playing the game at all. Players are given details about what they are facing, but little other information is gifted to them as to the background of the game.
They wanted to leave a mysterious feel to the gameplay although it seems they left a bit too much up to the imagination. Players quickly become frustrated with the lack of information gifted to them throughout the story and it is something that had many neglecting to buy the second installment in the series.
6 Amazing: The Witcher 3
This game has been raved about for years since its release and the storyline is what makes it such a great choice for fans of RPGs. Players are given several choices throughout the game that have no morally right or wrong choice. The characters they added into the game are also well-rounded and have intricate backgrounds that allow gamers the ability to connect to them on a deeper level as they make their way through the story.
5 Overrated: Final Fantasy XIII
This was a highly anticipated game that many gamers hated because the story was so overrated. Gamers felt as if bits and pieces of the story in Final Fantasy XIII were being thrown at them, as well as unfamiliar terms, and they were left with little reason to care. They never felt the connection to the characters or their mission in ways they should have and it had many struggling to finish the game because of this severe flaw in the story.
4 Amazing: Persona 4
Persona 4 is a story about Japanese high school students as they face a variety of challenges that put a gamer at the center of a murder mystery. The character development throughout the story was so strong that gamers felt an emotional connection to them.
It is unique as the main character not only jumps into the Midnight Channel to battle monsters but is also responsible for spending time in school making friends and taking exams. This integration of both fantasy and realism is what makes the story so unique and a major reason why this game has remained so popular over the years.
3 Overrated: Dragon Age 2
This game had a lot of potential as fans were obsessed with Dragon Age: Origins, the first installment in the Dragon Age series. Unfortunately, Dragon Age 2 left fans hanging and many blame it on the fact that this game was only in production for a short amount of time, compared to the five years it took to make its counterpart. The storyline had plenty of great ideas, but it didn't come together in a more polished way as the ending left fans with a cliffhanger that didn't make much sense to gamers.
2 Amazing: Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 transported players into the wild west and the storyline took them on an educational and adventurous journey. They followed Arthur Morgan as he faced life as an outlaw and dealt with all sorts of interesting characters. The addition of his disease into the storyline was a nice touch and players couldn't help but play it through to the very end as their decisions even impacted the final outcome of the game.
1 Overrated: Diablo 3
This is the third installment in the series and fans were sorely disappointed by the storyline that the developers came up with in Diablo 3. Many thought that it was too predictable and often found themselves switching games after they reached their limit of cringeworthy lines for the day. It still has a large fan base because of the gameplay, but it could have been taken to another level if the storyline hadn't fallen so flat.
