Hannibal: Every Actor Who's Played Jack Crawford | Screen Rant

The boss of both Will Graham and Clarice Starling, Jack Crawford is a powerful figure in the Hannibal franchise, and here's the actors who played him. Sure, Will and Clarice might do the heavy lifting, but they arguably wouldn't be able to do that without a reasonable authority figure in their corner. Jack isn't a perfect boss, to be sure. He can often push Will way too hard, and seems to have romantic feelings toward Clarice, but he's usually on the level. Except when he's not, because sometimes people in his position have to withhold things.

Jack Crawford, above all else, wants to get cases solved. If he needs to manipulate a bit to do that, that's just what has to be done. When one is dealing with psychos like Hannibal Lecter, Buffalo Bill, and Francis Dolarhyde though, it's hard to really blame Jack for bending the rules at times. It's just that sometimes, like with Will, he doesn't quite know when to stop pushing for the win, leading Will himself to bend until he breaks.

Jack Crawford is a complicated man, and no one understands him but his job. He's been played onscreen four times at this point, and likely, he'll someday be back onscreen, perhaps in CBS' upcoming Clarice series. For now though, here are the various actors to wear Jack's suit and tie.

Prolific character actor Dennis Farina played Jack Crawford first, in Manhunter, director Michael Mann's 1986 adaptation of Red Dragon. A real-life former cop, Farina was actually discovered by Mann while working as a police consultant on one of his films. So Farina certainly knew a little about law enforcement when he was hired for the Jack Crawford role.

Another prolific and esteemed character actor, Scott Glenn, played Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, which is still the definitive entry in the Hannibal Lecter saga to most. After his experience with Lecter previously, this Crawford is weary of dealing with him, but has to if he wants to save Buffalo Bill's latest abductee. In the book, Crawford is also balancing his wife's terminal illness with the case, a plot point adapted into the TV show.

Continuing the pattern, another established, award-winning character actor played Jack Crawford in 2003's Red Dragon, former Martin Scorsese muse Harvey Keitel. While Keitel isn't a former cop like Farina, he does bring a similar believability and gravitas to the Crawford role after a career containing quite a few police characters, as well as service in the U.S. Marine Corps.

When it comes to gravitas, there are few who equal Hannibal's Laurence Fishburne, he of the large stature and intimidating baritone voice. Fishburne has quickly become many fans' preferred Jack Crawford actor, and it's no wonder, as he fit the role like a glove. When Fishburne's Jack talks, everyone around him better listen up, because he really doesn't want to have to repeat himself.
