If you ever wondered what Star Wars: Episode X would be like if the script were written by artificial intelligence, the YouTube channel Blue Bantha Milk Co. has your answer, and the result is rather amusing. After over 40 years in the making, the Skywalker Saga, which began with George Lucas’s original Star Wars in 1977, ended in 2019 with Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker to a mixed reception from fans.
One prominent issue with Episode IX is it left many questions unanswered, such as Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke’s backstories not being adequately fleshed out. Actors John Boyega (Finn), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) were not shy about voicing their displeasure with decisions made regarding their characters. The Last Jedi was notably the most criticized among the sequels, mostly for Rian Johnson’s treatment of Luke as a character. Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) being shoehorned into the final episode was not well received either.
Despite the widespread distaste for the sequel trilogy, Star Wars remains an iconic franchise, and its fans are always hungry for more. To feed fans' desires, Blue Bantha Milk Co. embarked on an extraordinary project that involved training artificial intelligence to create an entire Star Wars movie script. Using the custom text generator InferKit, the team behind the YouTube channel fed the A.I. bot a brand new opening crawl and the scripts for Episodes I to IX. After hours of assiduously editing what the program generated and running it back through, the bot finally spits out a full script for the next installment in the beloved franchise, titled A New Light Rises, and the result is absolutely uncanny. Blue Bantha Milk Co. will even be live-streaming a virtual table read of the script, and you can watch part one below:
Amazingly, the A.I. bot could ingest the opening crawl and every moment from the entire Skywalker Saga to inform its creation of a new original script. A few noteworthy moments from the A.I. generated-Episode X include BB-8’s tragic death and “a bikini-clad Sith pirate girl,” which is undoubtedly inspired by Princess Leia’s iconic slave outfit from Return of the Jedi.
With A.I. systems evolving rapidly and continuously improving their ability to generate the written word, scripts written by A.I. is a trend that will not be going away anytime soon. While these programs are still far from perfect and mainly used for entertainment, it is certainly becoming less difficult to envision a future in which writers could be replaced partially, or maybe even entirely, by artificial intelligence.
