One of the main selling points of Apple’s new iPhone 12 series is the inclusion of 5G support. However, since launch the support has come with a major limitation with iPhone users unable to activate 5G on both SIM lines at the same time. A problem that’s all the more likely to affect those who use two lines for work and personal, or for those who travel often and want the fastest speeds available.
The iPhone 12 series were not the first iPhone models to come with support for dual SIM lines. Instead, that status was reserved for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, launched in 2018. However, the iPhone 12 series does represent the first iPhone models to feature 5G support. The problem is 5G can only be enabled on one SIM card. Essentially, when dual-SIM mode is enabled, the iPhone reverts to 4G LTE for both.
This problem is now in the process of being worked through as the latest iOS 14.5 beta includes support for 5G when dual-SIM mode is enabled, as revealed by Rene Ritchie. Providing there are no issues found, then the dual-SIM 5G support will arrive when iOS 14.5 becomes available to the general public. If Apple follows the same iOS update schedule it has over the past few months, iOS 14.5 could roll out to iPhone users as early as this month. If not, then the update and the option to enable 5G dual-SIM mode will likely arrive in March.
For iPhone users who don’t currently use two SIMs in their phone, the new support probably won’t matter. However, that is only one of the reasons to look forward to the update. For example, Apple is also readying a fix for Face ID on iPhone when the user is wearing a mask. Although the fix does require the iPhone user to also own an Apple Watch and be wearing it at the same time. The update is also understood to come with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X controller support as well. With improvements to Face ID, dual-SIM mode, and controller support, Apple is fixing some important problems currently experienced by users.
It is also possible that the next iOS update will include Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature. This is one of the latest attempts by Apple to improve user security and privacy by ensuring they are informed and in control of the permissions used by apps installed on an iPhone. Even if the privacy-focused feature isn’t included in the next update, Apple’s iOS 14.5 is still shaping up to be quite the iPhone upgrade.
