How Much Banjo-Kazooie Notes Are Worth In Real Money

Every classic platformer has its own take on currency. Mario has Coins, Sonic has Rings, and Banjo-Kazooie has Notes. Not "notes" as in the British term for currency, but "notes" in the musical sense. They are literally solid gold expressions of musical annotation, and (perhaps unsurprisingly) they're worth a pretty penny in real money.

Apart from the series' more iconic collectible, Jiggies, Musical Notes are the catalyst for progression in the Banjo-Kazooie games. They've appeared in every mainline entry in the series, though their purpose varies from title to title. Sometimes they are used to open doors, sometimes to learn abilities, and sometimes they are just money used for everyday goods and services. Using this last purpose as a metric, some economists have managed to estimate the rough value of a single Bajo-Kazooie Note in the American dollar.

According to Online Lending company Net Credit, a single Note from the Banjo-Kazooie universe is worth roughly $20. That may not seem like a lot for a hunk of gold the size of Banjo's head, but it has the potential to add up over time. Out of all the franchises Net Credit evaluated, Banjo-Kazooie ranked as the eighth most profitable series for its protagonist. Furthermore, Banjo's notes are the third most valuable currency overall. Even so, all of the collectible Notes present in the entire Banjo-Kazooie series only add up to about $153,880.

As a lump sum, $150,000 doesn't sound so bad, but that's the total salary of Banjo's entire career being a video game protagonist. He could likely pay off the average person's student load debt and acquire a few quality amenities, but he's far from being super wealthy, especially compared to Mario's staggering accrued $800 million coin vault or Commander Shepard's $6 million bank account. There is one potential silver lining, however.

Even though these are carefully calculated estimations for the value of different in-game currencies, they could never be 100 percent accurate. For starters, the method used to determine the exchange rate is inherently limited. In Banjo-Kazooie's case, Net Credit has estimated it based on the value of a $1,000 grenade launcher that is worth 50 Notes in BK: Nuts & Bolts. This estimation is based off of the value of a single item, which may differ wildly across universes due to supply and demand. If grenade launchers are more rare in Banjo-Kazooie than the real world, then their respective values will be entirely different.

This means that the Notes in Banjo-Kazooie are potentially worth exponentially more than what's estimated. Banjo could be a multi-billionaire, lording over Spiral Mountain in an opulent (yet so far unseen) mansion. Nevertheless, Banjo's character seems far too humble to flex his wealth in such a way, if he has any at all.
