Disney Villains Swap Lives in Upcoming Descendants Manga

Disney's Descendants is receiving another new story in the form of a manga. This manga is currently listed with the title, Disney Manga: Descendants 2021. It continues where Descendants 3 left off and will reveal the next chapter of Auradon and the Isle of the Lost.

Disney's Descendants first aired on Disney Channel in 2015. It has received two sequels, an animated series, spin-off novels, comics, manga, and animated specials. The movie tells the story of the Villain Kids (VKs): Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos. They are the children of popular Disney villains Maleficent, Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella de Vil, respectively. Villains and their children live on the Isle of the Lost, while the children of Disney's heroic characters and royalty live in the magical land of Auradon. Descendants took the VKs and showed them a new life, which has expanded to include more villains and heroes throughout the rest of the franchise.

Now, manga publisher TOKYOPOP is going to release a new manga that continues the story of Disney's Descendants. This will be the third manga that the publisher is releasing under the Disney Descendants line. The current title is listed as Disney Manga: Descendants 2021, though the "Descendants 2021" is likely to change in the near future. The creative duo behind this upcoming manga is Jason Muell and Natsuki Minami.

Opening the bridge between Auradon and the Isle was the easy part - bringing two disparate cultures together will be the real challenge that Mal must face. Realizing that she needs help, Mal brings on the two people who best personify their respective homes as consultants: Audrey for Auradon and Uma for the Isle of the Lost. They're charged with helping Mal introduce their own cultures to a whole new audience... but how?

As far as Mal sees it, they can only really truly understand the issues that the people of Auradon and the Isle of the Lost will face by first experiencing it for themselves, which means that Audrey will need to live a day in Uma's life on the Isle and Uma in Audrey's shows in Auradon. This experience - full of embarrassing missteps and unexpected situations - opens up Audrey and Uma's eyes to just how inattentive they'd been to the challenges faced by those who'd grown up elsewhere and inspires them to join forces with Mal to find a better solution to truly integrate their cultures.

Uma made her debut in Descendants 2 and has since become a staple character of the franchise. Audrey began her journey as a selfish Auradonian princess, but became a villain within Descendants 3 following King Ben's proposal to Mal - his long-term reformed villain girlfriend. Recently, Descendants: The Royal Wedding was announced - an animated special which will feature the wedding of King Ben and Mal. However, that isn't the only new story that the VKs are getting. Disney's Audrey and Uma will be switching places and finally helping to make the changes that the final movie in the trilogy mentioned both worlds needing. The barrier between Auradon and the Isle may have been taken down, but the futures of the villains and their children were not revealed. The way to merge Auradon and the Isle was not revealed. It was simply said that Uma and Mal would work together to make it happen. Now, fans will see this happen - though Audrey will also be added into the mix.

Audrey may be an Auradonian and princess by birth, but she did spend time as a villain not too long ago. While she initially doesn't seem like the best pick to be an ambassador considering her typically snobby attitude, her journey from hero to Disney villain and back again could make her perfect for the role. She knows what it's like to be tempted to do evil things for personal gain despite being raised rich and privileged. However, she doesn't know what it's like to scrape for food, fight to survive, or hustle others to stay ahead. This will provide one of the most VK-hating characters with a brand new perspective that is sorely needed.

Swapping the lives of two iconic characters within this franchise, particularly different kinds of villainous figures, is an intriguing idea. The latest installment in this Disney spin-off series is definitely one of the most ambitious. The two previous manga titles within this series included Disney Manga: Descendants - Evie's Wicked Runway and Disney Manga: Descendants - Dizzy's New Fortune. Now, there will be another and it is sure to reveal a lot about what the VK's futures will look like. Disney Manga: Descendants 2021 is slated for release on October 12, 2021.
