Warning! Spoilers for Avengers Mech Strike #4!
In Marvel Comics, Thanos is a threat that the Avengers don’t take lightly, and now he’s given them reason to hate him even more after finally admitting what he thinks of their ever-changing costumes! Hint: he isn’t all that big of a fan.
Touched on in the newest action-packed issue of Avengers Mech Strike #4 by Jed Mackay and Carlos Magno, the Avengers are having a tough time beating back the encroaching forces of the time traveling villain named Kang the Conqueror as they do what they can to take back Avengers Mountain from his tightening grip. Yet despite being equipped with giant superhero mechs that are as cool looking as they are powerful, the Avengers are pushed back and forced to retreat, reluctantly gaining the help of the Mad Titan himself, Thanos, in the process.
Appearing before the Avengers as a past version of himself that isn't even aware of their existence thanks to Kang’s usual time travel related shenanigans, Thanos agrees to help defeat their mutual enemies even though team members like Bruce Banner aka The Hulk and Spider-Man are entirely opposed to the idea. But in a throwaway line that feels way more cutting to the superhero community than any other comment he could possibly make at the moment, Thanos slips in a nonchalant insult directed specifically toward the Avengers’ costumes, and once and for all admits how he really feels about them.

Saying, “You amuse me, Avengers, with your raised hackles and your gaudy costumes,” Thanos annihilates the morale of superhero seamstresses and carefully chosen fashion statements the world around as he hits the nail on the head in regards to what the Avengers wear day in and day out – present company included. And although he follows this comment up with an assuring statement that sees him officially join the Avengers for this specific mission, the damage has been done as the iconic threads of the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" are dragged through the brightly colored dirt.
But perhaps what’s most funny about this entire ordeal is the comment that Spider-Man makes under his breath that calls Thanos out for being a hypocrite when it comes to his own choice in spandex. Whispering, “…he thinks our outfits are gaudy?” Spidey rightly questions a guy who runs around wearing bright purple and gold get-ups while more often than not wielding the rainbow colored accessory known as the Infinity Gauntlet, so if “gaudy” is the word used for the Avengers, Thanos is one step beyond that in a more showy or even garish kind of way.
So while Thanos isn’t wrong in thinking that the Avengers and their assorted costumes are a bit over the top when it comes to their choice in color palettes and overall looks, he also needs to check himself and his own fashion preferences the next time he opens his purple mouth. But that’s neither here nor there, and as Thanos suits up in a giant oversized mech to battle Kang (which is unsurprisingly colored bright purple and gold), the costume comment can slide…for now.
