After plenty of rumors regarding a 4K model, Nintendo has announced the new Switch (OLED model). While it's not the 4K console many fans were hoping for, the new Switch does come with a few improvements and new features. Here's everything to know about the Switch (OLED model) and its release date.
The reveal trailer for the OLED Nintendo Switch was a bit of a surprise, even though several rumors and alleged leaks were strongly pointing toward a new and improved console. Arguably the biggest new feature is the screen itself, which is a larger 7-inch display that supports 720p resolution (up to 1080p in docked mode). The system is also a bit heavier and comes with twice as much storage space (64 GB up from the standard Switch's 32 GB).
Also included as a part of the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is the support of a LAN cable thanks to a built-in ethernet port, perhaps showing the company's increased focus on broadening Nintendo Switch Online's appeal. Original Joy-Cons will work on the newest model, and all existing games will run on the new system as well. When the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) launches, it will be available in both white and black (with red and blue Joy-Cons). Based on previous Nintendo Switch editions, though, other colors will most likely become available sometime after the initial release.
The Nintendo Switch (OLED model) will release on October 8, 2021. This puts the console release just slightly ahead of the typical holiday release window that many insiders were expecting. It also means the console will come out before hotly anticipated titles like the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes and expected 2022 releases of Splatoon 3 and Breath of the Wild 2.
The OLED version of the Nintendo Switch is priced at $350, meaning it's about fifty dollars more than the standard Switch and $150 more than the Switch Lite. The limited improvements to the OLED model may deter some prospective buyers. However, earlier rumors suggested the Switch Pro would release in 2022, so there's always the possibility another Switch console (and one with 4K capabilities) is still in the works to compete with Sony's PS5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X.
For now, Nintendo fans hoping for a new Switch this year will have to be content with the OLED version. While the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) has some decent improvements, it's a far cry from the 4K Switch a lot of people were hoping for.
