Chris Pratt says he can't believe his luck that his childhood dream of playing Super Mario has finally come true. This week, it was announced that Pratt will be voicing the iconic character for a new animated movie entitled MARIO, based on the classic Nintendo arcade game. Created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi in 1983, Super Mario Bros. features the adorable duo Mario and Luigi, two mushroom-eating, turtle-squashing plumbers on a quest to save Princess Peach. After nearly four decades, Super Mario Bros. remains one of the world's best-selling game franchises and has become prominent in pop culture. It also inspired an animated series and a feature film in 1993.
The new MARIO film will be produced by Illumination and Nintendo, and is slated for release in 2022. Aside from Pratt, the animated movie will also feature the voices of Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Micheal Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. While details of the film remain slim, the announcement of its star-studded cast ensemble signals that MARIO intends to dominate the box office once it hits theaters.
Pratt has taken to Instagram to express his excitement over his new role. The 42-year-old actor posted a video saying that playing Mario is a dream "come true." Pratt explained how he used to steal quarters from a wishing well as a kid, just so he could play Super Mario Bros. at a nearby arcade. He joked that while he must've "stolen someone else's wish," he is thrilled to be voicing his childhood hero. "Dreams come true!" Pratt exclaimed as he ended his post. Watch the full video below:

Pratt will be the third actor to portray Super Mario, after Italian-American wrestler Lou Albano for the 1989 animated series and comedian Bob Hoskins in the 1993 live-action film. Pratt's casting initially received mixed reactions from fans who have long been awaiting a Super Mario movie reboot. Some questioned if Pratt could successfully pull off Mario's Italian accent, while others thought his voice simply doesn't fit the game character. Meanwhile, many other Pratt fans celebrated Nintendo's announcement and cheered on the actor.
It is understandable that fans are so invested in the new Super Mario film. After all, the game has been around for nearly 40 years and is still well-loved today. Pratt certainly has his work cut out for him as he gears up for his "dream" role. That said, the actor has always surprised fans with his comedic talent with performances as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy and Owen Grady in Jurassic World, so it's unlikely that his Mario interpretation will disappoint. Fortunately, Pratt has more than a year to prepare, as MARIO won't be out until December 2022.
