The first teaser trailer for The Romanoffs, Amazon’s new anthology series from Matthew Weiner, confirms the series’ impressive cast and also offers up a fall premiere date. Since Mad Men ended in 2015, anticipation has been slowly building for Weiner’s followup series, which turned out to be the surprisingly high-concept anthology comprised of eight episodes about disparate groups of characters, all of whom believe themselves to be descendants of the Romanov royal family.
With Weiner’s name attached, as well as a writers’ room that includes several Mad Men alums, the project was quickly snapped up by Amazon. Since then, there’s been little information regarding the new series, but shortly after the streaming service delivered its presentation at the Television Critics Association summer press tour 2018, the first teaser (or announcement trailer, really) popped up online. Though it’s devoid of any actual footage, the teaser makes due by simply listing off the laundry list of names involved, which, whether you’re a fan of Mad Men or not, makes for a compelling reason to check the show out.

Aside from returning Mad Men players, like Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Cara Buono, and Jay R. Ferguson, the show welcomes an impressive talent list that includes Kerry Bishé (Halt and Catch Fire), Griffin Dunne (Succession), Clea DuVall (Veep), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Kathryn Hahn (Transparent), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Diane Lane (Paris Can Wait), Ron Livingston (A Million Little Things), Annet Mahendru (The Americans), Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black), Amanda Peet (Brockmire), Paul Reiser (Stranger Things), Corey Stoll (The Strain), and Noah Wylie (Falling Skies). And that’s just a sampling of the show’s expansive cast.
That The Romanoffs is an episodic anthology like Black Mirror helps make a cast list like that possible without causing the budget to skyrocket. Even so, the series is set in various locations all over the globe, so there is a certain expectation for its visuals to be equally impressive. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how Weiner and co. make use of the wealth of talent at their disposal and how much of a departure this new series is from the masterpiece that is Mad Men.
With still so little to go on in terms of what the series will actually be like, it’s good to know that the premiere date is just a few months away. Hopefully there’ll be a full trailer delivered before too long, so audiences can better judge just what The Romanoffs has in store.
