The Grinch Movie's Billboards Have Incredibly Mean Messages

The Grinch animated movie is being promoted across Los Angeles with incredibly mean billboards, including one telling people to stop moving to LA. News of the most recent iteration of The Grinch first broke in 2013, and it has been a long and arduous journey getting the film onto the big screen. And it seems that the studio is having fun with promoting their latest project.

Dr. Seuss' holiday children's book, The Grinch, first became an animated special in 1966, and a live action film – starring Jim Carrey – in 2000. While the animated movie has become a holiday classic – and received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the live action version didn't fare quite as well. Perhaps that is why this newest remake has returned to animation. The Grinch (2018) will feature Benedict Cumberbatch as the Christmas-hating monster with additional voice-over work from Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson and Pharrell Williams. Coming out of the studio that produced Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets, and Sing, the expectations are high for this remake.

LAist reports that billboard advertisements for The Grinch have popped up all over LA featuring statements that effectively crush the dreams of would-be actors everywhere. The billboards feature a variety of clever quotes from the Grinch himself, focused mainly on the difficulty of becoming a successful actor in LA, including statements such as, "Stop moving to Los Angeles, it's full" and "Oh you're trying to make it in Hollywood? Let me know how that goes." Two other examples are included below in a tweet by The Middle actor Brock Ciarlelli:

Just as this is not the first time The Grinch has landed on the big screen, so too is it not the first creative advertising strategy this movie has attempted. A smart and timely trailer released back in February featured the Grinch watching the Olympics and then fantasizing about participating in the ice skating competition. The team behind this movie is breaking beyond the mold of traditional advertisements, and, hopefully, their hard work will be reflected at the box office.

The newly reimagined version of The Grinch appears ready to do whatever it takes to build an audience. The use of bizarre marketing campaigns has caught people's attention; hopefully, this will help to set it apart from prior remakes, specifically the less than successful live-action version. If the billboards indicate anything, it's that Cumberbatch's Grinch appears a bit more cynical than his predecessors, especially as it pertains to Hollywood.
