Does Mowgli Have An After-Credits Scene?

Netflix's Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is director Andy Serkis' reimagining of The Jungle Book - but does it have an after-credits scene? Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book was originally published in 1894 as a series of short stories, some of which followed a young boy who'd been raised by the animals of the jungle. The tales included in Kipling's work struck a chord with people around the world and the book has been adapted to film a number of times - including, perhaps most famously, Disney's animated The Jungle Book. Then, of course, Disney revisited their adaptation of Kipling's stories for Jon Favreau's live-action/CGI hybrid that hit theaters in 2016.

However, while Disney and Favreau were working on their Jungle Book, Serkis was also working on what he said would be a scary and dark interpretation of Kipling's tales. Further, with Serkis' experience of bringing animals and creatures to life using motion capture technology, his version of The Jungle Book promised to put that tech to the test to showcase characters like the panther Bagheera (Christian Bale) and the bear Baloo (Serkis). To further set itself apart, Serkis' movie was originally set to be called Jungle Book: Origins, but was retitled Mowgli, and later acquired by Netflix. Then, Mowgli was given a release date, with a limited theatrical release as well.

Now that Mowgli is starting to roll out in theaters and will soon launch globally on Netflix, viewers may be wondering whether the movie has any additional footage following the credits. Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle does NOT have an after-credits scene, meaning the movie wraps up entirely before the credits start to roll. While it's always worth it to watch the credits to see who's involved in the making of a movie - especially one with as many technical aspects as Mowgli - Serkis' take on The Jungle Book doesn't set up a sequel or feature an extra scene to entertain viewers.

While a Jungle Book adaptation doesn't seem to have natural sequel setup, there are ways it could be done. Serkis' movie, which has a script by Callie Kloves, is based on Kipling's All the Mowgli Stories collection of short stories, rather than The Jungle Book. This collection features tales that follow Mowgli through to when he's 17. While Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle may have used most of these as inspiration for the movie, it's possible there's more material on which they could base a sequel. Further, The Jungle Book collection includes stories that don't feature Mowgli at all, so a potential sequel could go in a completely different direction.

Still, all discussion of potential sequel for Mowgli is moot until either Serkis or Netflix offer any indication they're interested in another movie. The Jungle Book isn't the most obvious property to base a franchise on, and considering Disney is working on a sequel to their Jungle Book, a follow-up to Serkis' film already has built-in competition. So, perhaps it's for the best that Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle doesn't set up a sequel with a post-credits scene.
