Marvel’s Runaways Season 2 Trailer Promises A Greater Team Dynamic

The team dynamic is a big part of the new trailer for season 2 of Marvel’s Runaways. Hulu’s television entree into the Marvel Cinematic Universe premiered last year with a retelling of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s comic of the same name, putting an emphasis on the characters’ home lives and relationships with their parents to the degree that very little running away actually transpired. It would seem the series is no longer interested in living its title down, as the new trailer makes it clear Alex, Nico, Karolina, Gert, Chase, and Molly are most certainly on the run.

Created for television by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, the pair infused the series with the same teen-drama spark that they brought to such series as The O.C. and Gossip Girl. The added benefit being, of course, this tale about a group of Southern California teens falls under the Marvel banner, and that means superpowers, supervillains, and in this particular story, a pet dinosaur. Though the first season suffered through some pacing issues and the aforementioned lack of any actual running away from home, it looks as though season 2 is stepping up its game.

The new trailer has two clear goals: 1) demonstrate that the show can deliver the sort of superhero action fans of such a series likely expect, and 2) set up a story where the teens are finally in direct conflict with the supervillain parents, otherwise known as the Pride. Those aren’t lofty goals so much as living up to the source material, but it looks as though Runaways season 2 is more than up to the task. Check out the trailer below:

Though the trailer works hard to convey a greater sense of urgency than was seen in season 1, most of that urgency seems centered on a giant hole in the ground. As has been the case with other Marvel television series, like, say, The Defenders, such plot devices can wind up becoming narrative sinkholes. Whether or not that will be the case with Runaways season 2 remains to be seen, and hopefully the show’s writers can make something compelling out of a literal void in its story.

Fans won’t have long to wait in order to find out, since the new season drops near the end of December. By positioning Runaways near the holidays, Hulu may see the show become a larger part of the expansive and never-ending television conversation, since it will be one of few new series premiering around that time. If so, it could bode well for Runaways season 3.
