As with every other title in the historic line of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XII did things that no other previous title had done. It was the closest to a true open-world title that fans had ever experienced in the series and it delivered a more open combat style that was still turn-based but just slightly tweaked.
And yet, for the differences, there were similarities as well. Vaan, the protagonist, was not far from Tidus, the protagonist from the previous single-player title. All in all, carrying on what is familiar to the title while introducing so many positive new arrivals, it often ranks near the top of any list bold enough to rank all the Final Fantasy titles. And with plenty of memorable characters, they deserve to be sorted into their Hogwarts houses, so let's get to that.
10 Vossler—Slytherin
Vossler, a former captain of the Knights of Dalmasca, was as patriotic and fierce as they come. He was determined to defend his homeland, even if it required some particularly unpleasant decision making. As a captain, he was willing to leave behind his soldiers if they were injured and thus slowing them down, as we saw Vossler do with Reks early in the game.
Having this ruthlessness attached to his ambition and brevity makes him a Slytherin through and through. You don't just sacrifice your countrymen in Gryffindor.
9 Reddas—Gryffindor
Final Fantasy XII does an interesting thing with their pirates, often making them nobler characters than the military men and leaders, and that was the case here with Reddas. While he is still riddled with the guilt from his past, he is able to find a higher calling in his defense of Dalmasca, coming across with the titular qualities of a Gryffindor—brevity and honor—both of which he displays in abundance right down to his sacrifice at the end.
8 Larsa Ferrinas Solidor—Hufflepuff
Larsa is one of the truly enjoyable side characters of Final Fantasy XII, being so young, yet so mature and aware of the world around him. His ability to see through class barriers, to trust others, and to diligently avoid conflict make him a paragon of Hufflepuff. All he wants is to restore the faith in his family that was lost by his brother, Vayne. He is a hard-worker and just an all-around good kid. This makes him such an excellent contrast to his brother, indubitably sorted into...
7 Vayne Carudas Solidor—Slytherin
There are certain things you can always count on every Final Fantasy title to have. One of those things is a primary antagonist in Slytherin. It's been the case so many times before and it will be the case so many times again. Such is the case here with Vayne Solidor, brother of our dearly sorted Hufflepuff Larsa.
Vayne, as his moniker suggests, is a vain, arrogant, and self-serving ruler who has aspirations to even more power than he already has. He will stop at nothing to get there, even leaving behind his family and his house to reach his own selfish needs.
6 Basch fon Ronsenburg—Gryffindor
Sharing many of the same ideals as Larsa (and a couple of others yet to come), Basch takes it a step further, thus landing himself in Gryffindor. He is chivalrous, brave, honorable and selfless. No matter what he does, he will not betray his code of ethics and he does it all to defend his precious Dalmasca, even if that means losing his own reputation to do so. He is fiercely loyal to those he serves with and is quick to put their needs in front of his own as well. He's pretty much a knight.
5 Fran—Ravenclaw
Final Fantasy as a series is not very ripe with Ravenclaws. They often veer more towards the extremes—bravery, selflessness, evil. But Fran exemplifies what it means to be a Ravenclaw in this series.
She does not make her opinions known very often and plays a very reserved character among a party of hot-heads and loudmouths. Yet when the situation calls for it, she displays wit and intelligence in her commentary and while little else is known about her, that alone is enough to land her in Ravenclaw.
4 Balthier—Slytherin
While Final Fantasy has a knack for Slytherin bad guys, they don't often deliver on Slytherin good guys, yet Balthier is one of their crowning achievements in that regard. Often referring to himself as the "leading man," as well as being proud, cunning, and more than a little arrogant, Balthier still shows a fervent loyalty to Fran, and later to the rest of the members in his party. While this is all likely a mask of his own vulnerabilities, the personality still exists and makes him an excellent example of some of the best parts of Slytherin.
3 Ashe—Gryffindor
Much like Basch, only with hints of Slytherin, Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca is as proud as Balthier and as loyal as Larsa. She's independent and determined, though her determination doesn't take her as far as a Slytherin because she isn't in it for the power.
She's just in it so far as to see her homeland restored to its former glory. Though her indignation can lead to some butting of horns, this is typical in a brave, hot-headed Gryffindor, thus she is an easy one to place.
2 Penelo—Hufflepuff
Penelo is the clear foil to the often reckless and irresponsible Vaan. She can be found trying to intervene and prevent him from any brash decision making, erring on the side of caution herself. She does it all out of love and loyalty to those closest to her. She ranks among the commonfolk of Dalmasca and doesn't possess the bravery to stand up for herself, letting others do that rebelling nonsense and going along for the ride because she is so loyal to them.
She's ordinary, but that's what makes her so extraordinary to many of the "higher-ups" of the group.
1 Vaan—Gryffindor
Vaan comes from the exact same upbringing as Penelo, being an orphan living in the shadow of an empire. But having lost a brother in the war and being the leader of the orphan group, he soon learns how much he can do with a little bravery and daring, both of which he has in abundance. While it can often get him in trouble thanks to a certain brashness, he does it all for the good of people like him, and for the people he fights the good fight with, thus making him a clear (and sometimes annoying) Gryffindor.
