RDJ’s fellow Avengers & MCU co-stars wish him a happy birthday. As one of the most popular Marvel characters to have ever been brought to life on the big screen, Downey Jr.’s profile has grown enormously over the past decade. Before his casting as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, Downey Jr. had maintained an impressive career as well, with a wide variety of films to his name. Twice nominated for Oscars, things began to take a different shape for the Chaplin star once he became known as Iron Man in Jon Favreau’s 2008 film of the same name.
Not only did this elevated superhero status make Downey Jr. more recognizable than ever before, but the resulting franchise and entry into the action-packed MCU arguably transformed the star’s career. While Downey Jr was at one point more likely to appear in rom-coms and dramas, the Iron Man status meant that a new action star was born. As a result, Downey Jr. took on numerous other films for Marvel (including the insanely popular Avengers franchise) and landed the lead role as Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s highly successful franchise of the same name.
In addition to his far-reaching and varied fanbase, Downey Jr. also has a vast network of friends in Hollywood. Given the sheer magnitude of the MCU, this is something of a no-brainer, but seeing Twitter erupt with Happy Birthday tweets from fellow stars provides a glimpse into how bellowed RDJ actually is. Downey turned 55 on April 4, and some of Hollywood’s biggest names took the time to share their love for him. You can see a small roundup of some of the social media below, as well as Downey Jr.’s own Tweeted response to his friends and many well-wishers:
Though the messages are undoubtedly heartfelt, there is, of course, a little humor added to the mix as well. Filmmaker and actor Taika Waititi opted for a standard birthday greeting, though he randomly added a photo into his Tweet of British talk show host Graham Norton. There’s little to no physical resemblance between Norton and Downey Jr., but Waititi’s unconventional sense of humor thankfully wasn’t bothered by such petty details. Also rather interesting is the birthday GIF sent by Jeremy Renner. A single “R” can be seen at the edge of the frame, prompting the question: is that “R” specifically for Robert, or does Jeremy Renner have “Renner” written across his fireplace in large gold letters? Whatever the case, the letter came in handy for birthday wishes.
Celebrating a birthday during a pandemic isn’t going to be an ideal process, but, thankfully, social media can offer a method by which to stay in touch. Downey Jr. is one of many who will have to enjoy a somewhat subdued birthday celebration given the ongoing circumstances. Still, when things return to normal, fans can expect a variety of anticipated projects, including Sherlock Holmes 3 and an apparent cameo in Black Widow. For now, however, fans will have to make do with following Downey Jr. on social media and sending out a birthday wish during this challenging time.
