Star Wars' Wildest Hero is Skippy, The Force-Sensitive Droid

Over the years, there have been many things that exist both in Star Wars canon and now outside the canon, that are almost too wild to believe. At the very top of the list is Skippy the Jedi Droid - a force-sensitive robot whose story is almost too wild to believe.

Skippy first appeared in the 1999 Dark Horse Comic series, Star Wars Tales #1. Before Star Wars comics returned to Marvel Comics, Dark Horse was the go-to publisher for comic stories. Star Wars Tales gave some talented writers and artists to write their own Star Wars story's without much in terms of limitations. In the series first issue, Peter David wrote a story about a droid who just so happened to be force-sensitive

The eight-page story, "Skippy the Jedi Droid," by David, Martin Egeland, Howard S. Shum, Vickie Williams, and Harold MacKinnon tells the story of a very special droid. In the tale, Obi-Wan Kenobi searches on Tattooine for two potential Jedi Knights - one being Anakin Skywalker, the other being a complete unknown. However, it's revealed a self-aware droid named Skippy is, in fact, the other force-sensitive being on Tatooine. Skippy's had a sad life, he was laughed at by other droids as he grew up, wasn't allowed to play droid-games, and while working for Jabba the Hutt, he spilled a drink and thought he was going to be executed. However, later in life, Skippy found his true calling.

It's revealed Skippy was given lubricant "rife with midi-chloroxians,' (an obvious pun on Midchlorians) that made him force-sensitive. Mastering his force ability, Skippy removed his restraining bolt and traveled alone, free from ownership. After traveling the Tusken desert, he's found by Jawas, who clean him. It's there he meets another droid, R2D2, who has an important message to deliver to a Jedi master. After Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker show up and pick Skippy as their droid, the force-sensitive robot decides to let R2-D2 go instead, forgoing his Jedi destiny, so that the message he has can be delivered. Technically, Skippy saved the rebellion!

Essentially, Skippy fakes an injury (a blown motivator) to ensure Luke and Obi-Wan take R2-D2 and C-3PO instead. If you thought Skippy might get a happy ending, you'd be wrong. He falls into a coma and was "blasted into pieces" by a stormtrooper. Unfortunately, Skippy's journey ends almost as it began. The silly story isn't canon and for good reason. "Midi-chloroxians" giving a droid force sensitivity is a stretch - even by the usually dubious Star Wars series logic. Alas, in one version of Star Wars, Skippy sacrifices a future with the Jedi in order to save the galaxy. He's a hero. We shall never forget Skippy the Jedi Droid.
