At its Time Flies event, Apple unveiled a new Family Setup feature for Apple Watch. Family Setup allows other family members, even if they don’t have an iPhone, to take advantage of various features, including phone calls and text messages, along with personalized Activity goals. To maintain security, personal data will remain encrypted, meaning the user’s private information will stay private. Family Setup will be available as part of the upcoming watchOS 7 update.
Initially released in April of 2015, the Apple Watch comes with a focus on fitness, including heart rate monitoring. However, the Apple Watch can do much more than that. In addition to boasting many of the features an iPhone has, including the ability to play music and take screenshots, the Apple Watch can also keep track of how well the user sleeps, among other things. In 2017, Series 3 was released, which let people answer a call and utilize Siri without having to have their phone with them. Coinciding with the release of Watch Series 6, Family Setup looks to extend the Apple Watch experience to the whole family.
Family Setup allows an Apple Watch to be set up and used with someone else's iPhone. For example, if a parent has an iPhone and their child has an Apple Watch, the parent can set up the Watch with their phone, allowing the child to utilize multiple features of the Apple Watch. This includes texting and phone calls, along with access to various safety and health benefits, like Emergency SOS and Activity rings. Instead of tracking the amount of calories burned, with Family Setup, the Activity rings will focus on Move minutes instead. Parents or guardians will be notified if they’re listed as an emergency contact, and the child will also have access to their own Medical ID -- this keeps track of medical conditions and medications, along with allergies.
The features available with Family Setup aren’t just limited to health and activity. Users on the Family Setup will have their own phone number and their own Apple ID. Along with being able to make and take phone calls, they can also use the Walkie-Talkie feature to connect with other people wearing an Apple Watch. Thanks to the Memoji app, the user can create their own Memoji -- an animated emoji that they can customize to look like themselves -- and use it when texting friends, or display it on the face of the Watch. In addition, parents can send their children money via the new Apple Cash Family feature, which works with Apple Pay. Not forgetting that parents can not only view what their kids buy from their own phone, but they can also receive a notification when their child spends the money. Furthermore, through the Find People app on the Apple Watch, the parent or guardian will also be able to see where their family member is.
Third-party apps from the App Store can be downloaded on the Watch, including educational apps like LookUp: English Dictionary. Family Setup also adds a new Schooltime feature that's geared toward helping kids focus in school, whether at home or in a traditional classroom. When enabled, a yellow circle appears on the watch face to signify that access to apps is restricted and Do Not Disturb is on. For older adults in the family, watchOS 7 also features an X-Large face which makes the information on an Apple Watch screen easier to read.
